About this deal

They reach the cat and discuss whether Skulduggery will kill Serpine or not, now they are not that far away. Aside from the dialogue which is great as always in any Derek Landy book, it is not as well written in any shape or form and it just felt clumsy.

On a desperate journey to recover her sister's lost soul, Valkyrie Cain goes up against the High Sanctuary itself, and there is nothing Skulduggery Pleasant can do to stop her. And so he draws together a team of soldiers, monster hunters, killers, criminals, and Valkyrie’s own murderous reflection. It's still a funny book with great characters and magic - also, I did read it within a couple of hours, so I definitely didn't hate it.

With Valkyrie's arrival also brings in new stakes, as the series again introduces a seemingly omnipotent threat with godlike power who's way stronger than the last three villains like this- a villain so impressive, he'll need to be killed at two separate points in time, and it feels so tripe, for lack of a better way to put it. In Hell Breaks loose we get to see Skulduggery in a way that we haven't seen before and it lays the foundations for Lord Vile impeccably. I will say it did make me want to go back into that world and pick up where I paused reading them though, if that’s any consolation. Sorcerer's have long memories so it gives more context to people like Guild and Kenspeckle having very little trust in him.

My only question, however, is (and I'm assuming that Ravel put his plan in action by this stage or at least started to plan his plan) why did Ravel not panic when Valkyrie is hostile and obviously upset towards him, and later tells him that "The Sanctuaries don't interfere in the mortal world. Surely this is enough clues to tell him that his plan failed, or at least be worried that Valkyrie would tell the others what he was going to do? So while Derek was busy killing everyone I loved, I knew it would be fine in the end, they weren’t dead for good, so part of me didn’t really care? was it the only thing that made me laugh today and a welcome distraction from life for a couple hours and did Skulduggery give Valkyrie his hat and did it make me realise that no matter what i say i am definitely not over this stupid book series?I loved Erskine's descriptions ("most loyal", "too honest a face") because it adds even more depth to his character. What I personally wanted most from HBL was to see Skulduggery 300 years before we actually meet him.

I haven’t been in this universe for a while so I was a little rusty, but you definitely need some previous knowledge of this series if you want to get some enjoyment out of this book because with no context it’s not going to make any sense at all! If you’ve read the other Skulduggery books by Derek Landy (and you really should have read them by now), you’ve seen it all before: Some bad guy wants to bring about the end of the world, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie fight valiantly to stop it from happening. Ghastly especially gets a lot of time to shine here as he's essentially the viewpoint character for the story, letting us meet his mother and some of his closer friends outside of the Dead Men. Something for everyone and everything for someone, Skulduggery Pleasant is easily my book of the year so far. While they struggle to protect a known killer from an unstoppable assassin, Valkyrie is on a secret mission of her own. However, this book, even if I'm giving it 3 stars, reminded me why I love this series so much and has tempted me to think about a potential series reread, whether I will act on that is pretty unlikely, but it has reminded me why I love this series and for that I am grateful. On the one hand I did like it, on the other it didn’t really deliver anything spectacular and I don’t really see the point. It's not a bad kind of different but Skulduggery has only been a skeleton for a couple of years and he is not the Skulduggery we know. When Stephanie's uncle dies, she discovers his horror stories weren't fiction, and that evil forces are after her for a mysterious key.

I don't know the page counts, because to all depends on how big the font size is when the books are printed, but I do keep track of word counts. Stephanie goes to China Sorrows to see if she can get Skulduggery back, and China uses her given name against her.

Generally, I am left with a sense of both melancholy of things that might have been and sadness of what did happen in the end. In September 2023, Derek Landy annoounced via Twitter that there will be a third phase consisting of three books of the Skulduggery Pleasant series. It had also been nominated for Young Reader's Choice Awards 2010 in North America and it won Irish Book Awards in 2009 and 2010. Set in Tuscany, Italy, 1703, during the War, Hell Breaks Loose focuses on an enraged Skulduggery, 13 years after being killed with his wife and child by Serpine and resurrected as a living skeleton, and three years after his five years as Lord Vile, as he and the Dead Men hunt down Serpine and Vengeous, the Generals of Mevolent.
