About this deal

The Apartment Upstairs is the sort of read that will have you listening out for creaks in the floorboards from other rooms.

The Apartment Upstairs – Lesley Kara - My Reading Corner The Apartment Upstairs – Lesley Kara - My Reading Corner

People do much worse and kill and there are occasions where the author creates a real sense of pervading evil. She will not consider the idea of moving as her apartment has been modified and adjusted to her every need. There is creeping sense of tension and unease from the very beginning which continues throughout and which had me gripped desperate to know what was going to happen but I definitely didn't see that ending coming . While it did take me some time to get into the mystery the characters grabbed me from the start and although I did work some things out it was still an enjoyable read. Scarlett travels home to her apartment on the bus and like everyone else, cranes her neck to see ‘the bedroom bloodbath’ in the apartment upstairs from hers.

When Scarlett approaches Dee about planning her aunt’s funeral, an unexpected link between them emerges. At first, it would seem that Dee and Scarlett are only connected by Rebecca's death, but it soon becomes clear that they have other, long buried, links and these lead to Gina. Things she sometimes giggled at behind her aunt's back with Ollie or, worse still, ignored altogether, dismissed as nonsense. ABOUT 'THE APARTMENT UPSTAIRS': Scarlett's aunt lived - and was brutally murdered - in the apartment upstairs. Lesley Kara has the knack of taking the perfectly ordinary and making it into something extraordinary.Dee’s friend Gina went missing ten years ago, never to be seen again, and Scarlett’s aunt was brutally murdered in the apartment above Scarlett’s own place. THE AUTHOR: THE AUTHOR: Lesley Kara is an alumna of the Faber Writing Academy 'Writing a Novel' course. She's convinced that there's evil lurking upstairs, and strange noises and dark figures in the garden in the early hours of the morning do not help. The apartment upstairs is nothing less than the same as her older books, if not more because of a queer representation and chronic illness issues.

The characterisation is good throughout but especially of Dee and Scarlett and I like that the author gave some focus to ME via Scarlett who has frequent struggles with its symptoms. She even decided to introduce some totally pointless references to the global Covid pandemic in the final stages of the book, which added no value at all and were totally unnecessary and avoidable.Dee is busy balancing her job as a funeral director with organizing an event to mark the disappearance of her best friend, ten years ago. Slowly revealing their inner workings, leaving you feeling as if you are forming new friendships as you get to know them.
