About this deal

The great thing about Grand Central Station, the reason it’s so beautiful, is because one person built it,” Lebowitz says in the fourth episode. Answering questions from the audience is, for me, my favourite recreational activity,” Lebowitz says, warmly. It was never scary for me because the police were mostly arresting gay men, because that infuriated them more [than lesbians].

I really enjoy Fran in Public Speaking and her other talks, but her writing was, as one reviewer put it, "all wit, no world view. On wealth: “There’s only two kinds of people in the world—the kind of people who think there’s such a thing as enough money, and the kind of people who have money. In the vein of Lebowitz’s acclaimed Netflix limited series, Pretend It’s a City— The Fran Lebowitz Reader brings together two of the famed author’s bestsellers, Metropolitan Life and Social Studies.

In “elegant, finely honed prose” (The Washington Post Book World), Lebowitz limns the vicissitudes of contemporary urban life—its fads, trends, crazes, morals, and fashions. Now Film Forum had been shut for nearly a year, and I was viewing “Pretend It’s a City” from my couch in Brooklyn, feeling far away in more ways than one. I started snorting and giggling and enjoying every minute of her difficult sour-humored New Yorker self.people are always on their phones and not looking where they’re going; the subway is barely operative and smells bad; the city changes all the time, and, as soon as you finally get used to something, it’s gone. She can also be seen in various documentary films including the American Experienceseries on New York City, as well as Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures(2016), Regarding Susan Sontag(2014), and Superstar: The Life and Times of Andy Warhol(1990), among others. This has prompted her shift from an actively publishing author to a legendary public wit, who earns her living through speaking engagements.
