About this deal

Although the media portrays him as a caring father and good police officer, One-Fifteen lies to his colleagues about the events of the night of Khalil’s death. A representative of the police lodge described the inclusion of the books as "almost indoctrination of distrust of police" and asserted that "we've got to put a stop to that. Starr has just started to catch up with Khalil—her best friend from childhood, who has entered the dangerous world of drug dealing since Starr began attending prep school—when a gang dispute leads to a dancefloor gunfight. Daddy leans against the car window so he’s eye level with King and gives him one of those guy handshakes with so many movements you wonder how they remember it.

Tensions arise between Maverick and his brother-in-law Carlos; Carlos was Starr’s first father figure while Maverick was locked up. They feel like family, friends, and neighbors, and they give those unfamiliar with life in urban centers an understanding that the setting may be specific but the human condition is the universal. Starr admits that she is scared to be her true self around him, but he assures her that she is safe with him. After a grand jury fails to indict One-Fifteen, Garden Heights erupts into both peaceful protests and riots. Throw my little brother, Sekani, in there and you have the same person at eight, seventeen, and thirty-six.

Overall there are so many different types of characters in ‘The Hate U Give’each dealing with different issues from their background or reality such as Starr’s dad – Big Mav. Her increasing identification with the people of Garden Heights causes tension with Starr's friends, especially with her boyfriend Chris as well as Hailey, who makes racist comments at Starr. My phone vibrates again, probably either Chris asking for forgiveness or Kenya asking for backup against Denasia. It follows the story of Starr, who witnessed her unarmed friend killed by a police officer on their way home from a party. An older gentleman is attacked by a group of young men; we don't see the attack but we see the injuries. The American Library Association listed the book as one of the ten most-challenged books of 2017, 2018, and 2020 "because it was considered 'pervasively vulgar,'" contained "drug use, profanity, and offensive language," as well as sexual references, and "was thought to promote an anti-police message. On Salon, Erin Keane wrote that the novel is "topical, urgent, necessary, and if that weren't enough, it's also a highly entertaining and engaging read. Between a story about a bad car accident on the freeway and a garbage bag of live puppies that was found in a park, there’s a short story about an officer-involved shooting that is being investigated. She wipes her eyes a few times, probably thinking about Khalil or how that could’ve been me lying in the street. The novel also shows Starr's parents' struggles with remaining connected to their community while needing to protect and give opportunity to their children.
