About this deal

The hardbound book has an attractive green cover with gold lettering and a small illustration of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, on it. Originally published in 1937, The Hobbit has gone on to sell over 150 million copies over the years. There’s The Lord of the Rings Illustrated, which came out in 2021, and The Silmarillion Illustrated, which arrived last autumn.

This new edition of The Hobbit follows similar editions of Tolkien’s other books featuring the author’s hand-drawn maps and artwork. For the first time ever this new enhanced edition includes a full gallery of associated artwork, and is published in the same format as recent editions of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. Unique to this edition are two poster-size, fold-out maps revealing all the detail of Thror’s Map and Wilderland, an illustrated 88-page booklet, and a printed art card reproducing Tolkien’s original dustjacket painting. But the published art has afforded only a glimpse of Tolkien’s creative process, and many additional sketches, coloured drawings and maps – although exhibited and published elsewhere – have never appeared within the pages of The Hobbit. The Hobbit was adapted into a trilogy of films directed by Peter Jackson that were released between 2012 and 2014.

It’s kind of fun that they started with the “illustrated” concept, and tried out to see what they could pull off by stretching the concept to its limits. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an unexpected journey ‘there and back again’.You can find out more about our use, change your default settings, and withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future by visiting Cookies Settings, which can also be found in the footer of the site. Speaking about this, Chris Smith from HarperCollins said: “ The tale of the little hobbit on a big adventure was first read by the professor to his children as part of their winter reads, using his ‘home manuscript’ of the story. Hammond and Christina Scull add that, in this ‘home manuscript’, Tolkien would have been free to illustrate his story using any medium he wanted: coloured pencil, chalk, crayon, ink and washes, a far cry from the restrictions imposed by the publisher on the illustrations printed in the published book.
