About this deal

On the night of the de Vries's ball coming up about three weeks later, Mrs King, along with her carefully chosen group of six women, will strip the de Vries mansion of its valuables. I loved the way Hay structured this debut, and the countdown to the day of the heist was an excellent way to build extra tension. I don’t want to accidentally spoil anything so I’ll leave things here, however I do think this needs to be adapted into a movie or TV show ASAP. Alex Hay commented: “I couldn’t be happier that The Housekeepers has found such a perfect home with Frankie and the team at Headline.

On the night of the house’s highly anticipated costume ball—set to be the most illustrious of the year—they will rob it of its every possession, right under the noses of the distinguished guests and their elusive heiress host. I pledge allegiance to this plan, and to the bonds herein defined - with firm intent, free will, in ridicule of all doubt and fear. Upstairs, Downstairs meets Ocean’s 8 in Hay’s debut, an Edwardian caper set in a grand mansion on London’s Park Lane.King or her band of helpers well enough to really identify with them or fully empathise with their situation. It is June 1905, and elaborate plans are underway for a sumptuous masquerade ball at the grand house of the uber-wealthy Miss De Vries.

Anyone who knows me knows I adore a good heist book or movie, and The Housekeepers by Alex Hay gave me everything I could have hoped for!Unlike many disgruntled employees dismayed by the sudden loss of a steady paycheck, she is already plotting to turn her misfortune into opportunity. The story has a great sense of time and place and that gives it a bit more depth than the set up suggests.

Mr Shepherd, the Butler, has advised the lady of the house, Miss de Vries, that Mrs King was seen entering the male quarters the night before. An intricate conspiracy is put in place, and they must convince the cast of characters they have chosen to accept. Instead of sticking to a couple of solid reasons for wanting the heist, the book inserts a bucketload of themes, some of which were not even relevant to the main flow. It’s the perfect beach read, and as such it is clear newcomer Hay delivers what readers crave – excitement and thrills. The place is packed with little treasures, a glittering symbol of wealth and power, but dark secrets lurk in the shadows. Most of these blurbs or summaries comparing a new book to one or two others are exaggerations or downright false. Matters are complicated by the fact that Riordan, now a professional rival, is also on the case, and because the next time Marlowe sees Chrissie she is standing over a corpse in a Skid Row hotel room.
