About this deal

The Alperton baby has turned eighteen and can finally be interviewed - if Amanda can find them, it will be the true-crime scoop of the year, and will save her flagging career. Any changes made can be done at any time and will become effective at the end of the trial period, allowing you to retain full access for 4 weeks, even if you downgrade or cancel.

I appreciate books that do this dossier format, here though I felt like the reader needed to want to play detective in a way that I never do in mysteries.

This book requires a bit of patience (and maybe a bit of notetaking to keep track of who’s who) but it is definitely worth the effort and time invested. The premise here is that an investigative journalist is writing a book about an infamous cult murder/suicide that took place about eighteen years before. The Angels committed suicide rather than go to prison, and Holly - and the baby - disappeared into the care system.

Assisted by Ellie Cooper, who is helping in transcribing the interviews and phone conversations, Amanda is determined, perceptive and fearless, committed to getting to the bottom of things. The author delivers twist after twist that blew my mind, with each reveal leaving me more and more shocked 😱 Loved how everything was executed and came together too! I certainly felt I was putting into practise all I’d learned writing the first two books, and delivering a story that is hopefully more procedural and satisfying to follow.

They're imaginatively formatted, filled with great characters and even greater puzzels, and – most importantly – have a stonkin' good story at the heart of them. Not for your brain either because that's just going to explode into such a big pile of mush that you'll forget your own name. My tip for next year is The Maiden by Kate Foster – a feminist interpretation of an ancient murder mystery with its roots in Scottish folklore. The Financial Times and its journalism are subject to a self-regulation regime under the FT Editorial Code of Practice. When Glasgow detective Cameron Brodie travels to the isolated location to investigate the murder, he discovers a deadly and far-reaching conspiracy.

Amanda’s new angle is to track down a baby rescued from the group – the child will now be 18, and an exclusive interview would launch her book with a splash. This can be an effective storytelling device, but in this case, waiting for the private investigator heroine to get to where the reader is at the beginning of the story feels interminable. She is the bestselling author of The Appeal (a Sunday Times bestseller, Waterstones Thriller of the Month, the Sunday Times Crime Book of the Year and winner of the CWA Debut Dagger Award) and the Sunday Times bestseller The Twyford Code. The detail, the plot twists, the humour, even in dark places - she creates a brilliant puzzle for the reader to solve. There are lots of twists and much about the reality of publishing, alongside a really intelligent, character driven plot. Read it, enjoy it, decide what you will do with this information that's found its way into your lap.
