About this deal

It crumbles when you serve it–hence the name 😉– but it doesn’t disintegrate, there are chunks that hold together. I used half quick oats half regular, but would use all regular oats for a bit more crunch next time I think. Everyone loved it and there was a small amount leftover that everyone wanted to keep for the next day! Most people choose to can apples in a syrup of some kind, and I prefer canning in an extra light syrup that uses 10 1/2 cups water and 1 1/4 cup sugar for a 7-quart canner batch. Unless otherwise specified, I recommend draining the canned apple slices before using them in a baking recipe as they absorb (and release) a surprising amount of canning liquid.

I used brown sugar (ours is granulated) and reduced the sugar by 40 grams since the apples were sweet. I tried it once, twice, three times, then I decided I had to share it here because it is that good and that easy!On the bright side the pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon was a great hit as was the potato salad with lemon. Ever since my sister made an Apple Crumble by a well known celebrity chef for my birthday dinner (yes I’m weird, I seriously requested Apple Crumble instead of a birthday cake)and it was terribly disappointing.Once the syrup has come to a boil, strain the apple slices from the lemon juice/ascorbic acid water and add them directly to the boiling canning liquid. If you’re making extra light syrup, combine 10 1/2 cups water and 1 1/4 cups sugar in a pot and bring to a boil. OK, now I’m done stomping my foot over Dozer ruining my photos, a quick word on this Apple Cake recipe: It’s crazy easy and fast to make the batter, it’s made with FRESH apples (won’t work with canned, cake isnot as moist), and it really is beautifully moist. To prevent the apple slices from turning brown, toss them into a bath of acidulated water as you work. At a pinch you could try using apple pie filling but I have not tested the recipe with this alternative.
