About this deal

Give your child some black and white art materials to make a space picture with whirls, dots and dashes.

International Toys in Space - NASA

I had to stop half way through because it couldn't hold my attention between 7 different toys making comments in speech bubbles, and the vast amount of spot illustrations and and text boxes over full-page spreads.I enjoyed how the illustrations showed exactly where Cuddles was, bit by bit, over the course of the pages.

Make sure everyone understands the idea of a ‘story within a story’, and draw their attention to the way the toys help shape the tale as it happens. There’s even a built-in moral dilemma of exactly the right sort to engage young children, and danger sits alongside zany humour as the reader becomes both spectator and participant, engaging with the action while at the same time commenting on it – just as the toys do in the garden overnight. From ever-inventive, award-winning author-illustrator Mini Grey comes a hilarious and heartfelt new a motley group of toys left outside in the garden become true friends and brave heroes--in space! If you have access to a safe, high location, drop the toys and time how long it takes for them to reach the ground. This opportunity for connection and reflection prepares children to inhabit the emotional landscape of the book and makes the eventual reading experience richer and more relevant. End note: this book includes "crude" words such as "Stupid" and "Dang-it" in the beginning, but nothing more.

The author wants to send us the message of respecting other people's belongings and caring for others. There is a massive amount in this book for your class to engage with and they will be keen to talk about the story, as well as relate it to their own experiences. The book is about how toys become realistic over the night and seemed to be in space with an alien which they thought was a normal star. The toys that come to life and have an adventure at night are examples of personified and nonhuman characters that are normal in the fantasy genre. A book I would pair this would be "Theres no Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library)" by Tish Rabe. Strong characterisation and an engaging moral dilemma bring the toys’ world sharply into focus, and there’s plenty for readers to observe and question.
