About this deal

In the woodland further away from the farm, Alex and Peter construct decoy fire beacons to lure enemy bombers away from Southampton, as part of Operation Starfish. The team face the farming conditions of 1944, when Britain had been at war for five long years and the fields surrounding Manor Farm filled up with thousands of troops as the Allies assembled the largest naval task force in history for the D-Day landings. Alex and Peter, meanwhile, set about constructing a mole subsoiler from scrap farming equipment, to drain their waterlogged clay fields.

In the process they confront the wave of mechanisation that government regulation brought to wartime farming, grappling with a new tractor and getting to grips with a milking machine. As with the previous series, the first episode begins with the team moving into a cottage on a farm, this time in Hampshire. This latest experiment proves to be nothing short of a revolution in British farming, as the team take on their biggest challenge yet. Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn face up to the challenges of the biggest revolution ever seen in the history of the British countryside as they turn Manor Farm back to how it was run in the Second World War.On top of farmers' herculean efforts to double food production, their detailed knowledge of the landscape also made them ideal recruits for one of the war's most secret organisations - the 'Auxiliary Units', a British resistance force trained to use guerrilla tactics against German invasion. The team discovers that Wartime Farmers could lose everything - their home and their land - if the government did not think they were productive enough. They are visited by a 94-year-old conscientious objector who was conscripted as a farm labourer because he refused to fight on religious grounds.

Some nations suffered harshly during the shortages of wartime - others adapted and managed to keep their populace well-fed. Alex and Peter also learn how to set up 'decoy fires' to lure German bombers off target, a project known as Operation Starfish. Also in this episode, the boys revert to a Victorian solution to the shortage of animal feed - using traditional horsepower to operate a root slicer - whilst Ruth sets up an Emergency Feeding Centre. Alex and Peter spend much of the episode generating silage to feed their remaining animals over winter.A nation at war has many demands on its machinery and manpower - can you share resources more effectively than Lord Woolton and help the war effort? The Wartime Farm commissioning executives for the BBC are Emma Willis and James Hayes, and the Executive Producer for Lion Television is David Upshal. Alex has a surprise up his sleeve to make the party go with a bang, as the team prepare to leave the Wartime Farm. The team soon hear about the Allies' conquest of Berlin, and on 7 May 1945, the end of World War II in Europe.

Entertainment Magpie Limited t/a Music Magpie is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority FRN 775278. The team tackle the conditions faced by British farmers in 1940, when the full impact of rationing took hold and which also saw Britain face the onslaught of Nazi bombing in the Blitz. Fortunately, the residual heat provides an ideal input for some 'medicinal' home distillation of apples into hooch cider.Subsidized by the government to provide cheap food off ration for air raid victims, these 'British Restaurants', as Churchill dubbed them, quickly caught on. Along they way, they also discover how racial prejudice reared its ugly head during Land Girl recruitment - only to be overcome by the actions of a local farmer. The situation becomes all the more serious as war is officially declared and, soon after, France falls under German occupation.
