About this deal

Gore-Tex, or Gore Windstopper is a fabulous, thin membrane keeping the wind out but allowing moisture to evaporate. Unless you’re going to be active, you may want to pair the Black Diamonds with an outer glove in extremely cold temperatures and in the snow. The weave is also quite loose, and my pair began to fray after I caught a finger on something during a snowball fight. If you often find yourself working in wet and windy conditions (as landscape and nature photographers are sometimes wont to do), then waterproof gloves can be absolutely life changing.

We tested the latest Black Diamond Lightweight and Heavyweight Wooltech Gloves in addition to the Heavyweight ScreenTap Gloves that we recommend. Their stretchiness helps them form around hands better than other gloves, and, though they’re not as warm as the Moshi, they block wind better, too. The Elma gloves have three fingers with screen-friendly tips, which is better than the more standard two, plus, they’re made from supple hair sheep leather and have a luxuriously soft cashmere lining. A large patch of black leather on the palm makes it easy to grip slippery phones and metal railings. Our testers who identify as women thought the women’s fit was too tight, and the unisex gloves were too boxy. That said, they work best for a specific upscale style: If I’m layering up in a massive parka and snow pants, the Canada Goose gloves won’t be what I slip onto my hands; they’re not snowman-chic. There is value in guarding against leaning your hands on railings at traffic lights to prop yourself up. It took an hour for these gloves to dry, compared with the six hours that the equally thick Smartwool Cozy Gloves needed.

The Mujjo gloves work on all parts of the hand: fingers, knuckles, palm or heel – so you can swipe and tap easily. They weren’t as warm as the double-layer knit Moshi Digits, but our testers found them to be about as warm as the Black Diamond fleece gloves. The thick seams along the fingers meant we had to use our finger pads (not the tips or sides, which is a natural position) to type and swipe. The deerskin leather is wrinkle-resistant, durable, and treated with a touchscreen-friendly layer the manufacturer promises won’t wear off. The gloves are from Black Diamond’s liner series (meaning you can wear them with an outer glove) and are recommended solo in temperatures from 25 °F to 40 °F.The Workman Gloves are goatskin leather with wool trim, and their insides are lined with polyester faux fur. Even the most responsive touchscreen gloves can leave you feeling like a clumsy illiterate when you try to speed-type a text, and many phones require a fingerprint scan to unlock. Both pairs are well made and good-looking, and they offer above-average accuracy in typing, but they aren’t as warm as gloves we tried that were made from other materials. When I say that I could not type more than “t fdkf hag” while wearing my Dimore Winter Gloves and that they ripped at the seams when I pulled them over my knuckles, I mean that literally.
