About this deal

During World War Two a team of British spies attempt to rescue an American general from an impregnable castle in the German Alps but, when they discover there are double agents in the group, the team must discover who the traitors are and then escape against enormous odds. It is full-throated, roaring adventure, complete with a parachute drop behind enemy lines to attack a Nazi stronghold in the mountains of Germany, twists and turns double-crosses and triple-crosses, everything that made MacLean's novels so much fun.

Broadsword Calling Danny Boy’ by Geoff Dyer review – on ‘Broadsword Calling Danny Boy’ by Geoff Dyer review – on

The movie is more violent, with the heroes engaging in more gun fights and killing more Germans – the body count approaches a hundred, and Clint Eastwood kills more people in Where Eagles Dare than any of his other films. I couldn’t say too much in the summary without giving something away but it is an action packed book that I highly recommend you picking up. What's more, the cast of spooks, turncoats, and commandos who drive this story are more relevant than ever in our new era of special forces, black ops, and unpredictable alliances. For his part, sensible Clint Eastwood kept asking for fewer lines, and had to be reminded by the director not to twirl his pistol before holstering it, as they weren’t making a western. Smith backtracks to meet with another MI6 agent, Mary Elison, who’s following them, unknown to the rest of the team. He identifies himself as SS-Sturmbannführer Johann Schmidt of the SD, the SS intelligence branch and shows Kramer the name of Germany's top agent in Britain. Funny how the mindless rubbish of fifty years ago is *still* streets ahead of most 21st century films. The hardest part for me to get over was how unlikeable Smith was with his narcissism (which was seen as fair enough in the circumstances, but paranoia is part of narcissism anyway).

This edition has an informative 3 page introduction by the author, covering the genesis of the titles and the publishing history.

There is initial intrigue when having parachuted into enemy territory one of the saboteurs is found murdered, there is an enemy agent within the ranks! Still a nice copy of a hard to find book by this author following on the heels of "The Guns of Navarone". We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. Smith knows there are traitors among his team, as one after another dies in mysterious circumstances. Smith suggests the three impostors should prove they are genuine German agents by writing down the names of Germany’s top agent in Britain and all the German spies they know, which he will compare with a list in his possession.
