Overall, it was a nice read to breeze through as I learned more on winter swimming but would not recommend and was disappointed as I was expecting a more quantitative book coming from a PhD perspective. It was a very interesting read as I have a friend who winter swims and had previously asked me to join her. Full of brilliant insights on the cold-shock response and its benefits for mood and the immune system, Winter Swimming is an inspiring book that will keep people working out all through the darkest months. Danish scientist Dr Susanna Søberg leads us step by step into the icy water and explains the “cold-shock response”, the massive endorphin rush as our body reacts and adapts to very cold temperatures through the winter season. Actual data was few and far with the majority of evidence having the form of studies having not yet been conducted, personal stories, or “suggest, possibly, perhaps” as the justification on scientific evidence.The guidance and approach to winter swimming didn't match my experience but it was an interesting insight into how people around the world enjoy cold water.
