Description

Burton's second novel, The Muse, was published in 2016 and is set in a dual time-frame, during the Spanish Civil War and 30 years later in 1960s London. You have to hand it to the Scottish government: the deletion of WhatsApp messages is good preemptive news management, whether accidental, by default or deliberate. It’s 1980, early winter, and a relationship ignites – initially nurturing, then torrid, as Elise, motherless from the age of nine, allows herself to love and be loved. On an autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman knocks at the door of a grand house in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam. Despite the scrutiny, she still felt invisible until Constance Holden looked at her on Hampstead Heath by the cinnamon trees.

I should also mention I liked the direction Burton takes this story – some of the events could be predictable but they’re not at all; and she stops herself from offering up all of the answers. Lovers of reading cliches will be delighted to hear I actually burned something I was cooking on the hob because I couldn't tear myself away from it. Rose is thirty four, and has spent most of her life seeking information about her mother, her father not telling her much.In The Confession, Jessie Burton hasn't just captured a myriad of women's experiences but also the intrinsic ambivalence of living in a female body: the advantages, the oppressions. Rose and Elise's stories were made to seem as 'relatable' narratives portraying a contemporary/modern female experience.

If I had one tiny criticism it would be one section where Rose is reading one of Connie’s books and it’s like we’re in a GCSE English class being spoon-fed. After finding out Constance is a connection to her mother she takes a chance and starts to grow, gain confidence and learn more about herself and accept who she is.Three decades later, Rose Simmons is trying to uncover the story of her mother, who disappeared when she was a baby. Istina, knjiga ponekad skrene u propovijedanje, umjesto u pripovijedanje, ali teško je to zamjeriti autorici, žena ima mnogo toga za reći i zadala si velik zadatak s ovom knjigom. One winter’s afternoon on Hampstead Heath in 1980, Elise Morceau meets Constance Holden and quickly falls under her spell. Split in time between London and Los Angeles in the 80s and London in the present day, The Confession is a story about love, loss, desire and freedom.

Three decades later in London, Rose Simmons is trying to uncover the story of her mother, who disappeared when she was a baby. One blue-skied afternoon, 20-year-old Elise Morceau is mooching around Hampstead Heath in north London when she catches the eye of Constance (“Connie”) Holden, an imperious novelist of glittering renown. It was my first outing with Burton but I will definitely read her work again and would recommend this story to others, especially book club readers as it would provoke a great discussion. Rather than being held accountable for their actions they are made to seem as if they are the wronged ones. This is a beautifully written novel from Burton, the characterisations are wonderfully vibrant in a immersive narrative and there is a great sense of the differing locations of LA and London. years later, Rose is at a crossroads – unsure whether to stay with her boyfriend, what to do about her career, and whether she wants children. When she overhears a conversation at a party that turns everything on its head, Elise makes an impulsive decision that will change her life forever.
