Description

Dix says that having positive relationships with pupils depend on teachers defaulting to a restorative approach. Plus, for the first time, you'll now have access to live Conversations with Paul sessions on the last Friday of every month for the duration of your course. He was a head of department in three secondary schools and a Deputy Head Teacher before becoming a lecturer on one of Europe’s largest postgraduate teacher education programmes. In addition to working directly with schools, Paul has advised the Department for Education on the teachers standards, given evidence to the Education Select Committee and done extensive work with the Ministry of Justice on behaviour and restraint in youth custody. This book is a valuable read for all members of the school community - from head teachers to NQTs and classroom assistants - in all settings (including primaries, secondaries and alternative provisions).

Paul Dix’s Behaviour Change Online Course - When the Adults Paul Dix’s Behaviour Change Online Course - When the Adults

In chapter 10, and also throughout the book, Dix criticises the behaviour policies practiced at many schools. Offering a great mix of strategies, common-sense solutions, and realistic goals, Paul Dix has created an easy-to-read guide offering schools, in any environment, confidence and encouragement to create a school climate where all individuals earn respect through kindness, challenge and consistency. As a 14-year-old he vowed he would change the way adults deal with behaviour and I defy any reader not to rethink their own strategies as a result of reading this book. Her expertise arises from being both a young person who experienced complex trauma and an adult that completed a PhD in Mental Health Science. She designs powerful programmes of work that maximise positive outcomes and minimise barriers to adoption. Now, Dix emphasises that this should be a whole-school change and, if you are in a position to do so, this book navigates how this might occur.

BOOK CLUB RESOURCES - When the Adults Change BOOK CLUB RESOURCES - When the Adults Change

Paul stated that -˜small visible shifts in adult behaviour have an incredible effect on children's behaviour' and we have been able to witness this first hand. This is not only a UK shift in focus, with many jurisdictions around the world following a similar pattern. She looks at the whole school approach and works with all adults involved in a learner’s educational experience, from support staff to management. I agree with Dix in that relationship building is a teacher’s strongest behaviour management tool (for 10 of my nearly 14 years of teaching I ran a boxing club and had positive relationships with some of the most difficult pupils) but I disagree that punishment in the form of detentions etc.

Relationships and Behaviour Policy ‘SAFE, RESPECTFUL and

This was an extremely exciting opportunity to design a new school steeped in relational and Trauma Informed practice, from the furniture to the policies and practices. However, I believe this applies to classrooms too and Dix later recognises the importance of individual routines in classrooms to meet individual class needs. For example, Paul advocates the use of -˜recognition boards', where excellent behaviour is noted (on a whiteboard), instead of adding the names of those show poor behaviour. Hear from the teachers and leaders the effect it’s had on their culture, climate and relationships in school. One relatively inexpensive intervention is changing our school for the better: When the Adults Change, Everything Changesby Paul Dix has been the driving force behind us getting to grips with a consistent school approach to behaviour. I’ve been teaching long enough (and been a union rep long enough) to know that if there was a school that relied purely on scripted responses and restorative conversations and behaviour was still poor, you can bet your hidden stash of glue sticks that SLT will blame the teachers.
