Description

This method often is more convenient than setting up a dado head and is preferred if you need to make only a few cuts.

That's because the tops of the teeth on a 'normal' blade have alternating angled-tops, so will leave grooves. The chamfer or bevel cutting bit is commonly used for shaping the edges of objects such as book shelves, work tops and table tops and any other object where a sharp 90° edge needs to be removed. Also taking a big cut with a 1/4in shank bit needs to be done with care to avoid bending the shank of the bit (see above). By burying a dado stack in a sacrificial fence, I can easily set both the width of the rabbet and the depth to the shoulder. If you are fairly keen on carpentry and joinery, the router is one of the best power tools you can have in your tools arsenal as it can be used for a huge variety of jobs from cutting hinge recesses, mitering worktops, trimming and shaping edges to cutting a whole variety of timber joints.Router bits are designed to serve three primary functions: To create wood joints, to plunge into the center of a piece for grooves or inlays, and to shape the edges of wood. Those same case sides have a rabbet in the front that fits into a groove on the face frame’s stiles. Not only are rounding-over bits the most commonly used type of edging bit, but they’re also perhaps only second to straight bits in how often they’re employed. For trimming purposes, these bits can be used in a hand-held router, but a table-mounted router is best used when replicating patterns with a template. The bottom of the bit is often an afterthought, with the main body sometimes extending below the actual cutter.

Cove bits produce a concave quarter-circle that’s essentially the inverse profile of the rounding-over shape. While several other types of router bits (like the cove and roman ogee) are capable of making edge cuts for molding, molding bits save time and generate superior results. This means that it will feature a bearing at either the top or bottom of the bit that is the same diameter as the cutting bit itself.
