When confronted with a badly behaved Hamish Bigmore, Mr Majeika finds that he unintentionally ends up casting spells he thought he had long forgotten, such as changing Hamish into a frog or giving him vampire teeth. This problem affects the majority of the TVS programme archive as much of the original production paperwork and sales documentation has been lost during the intervening years.The pupils in Class 3 at St Barty's School are not impressed when their headteacher imposes strict rules of behavior for Halloween. He drops into the sleepy village of Much Barty, finding a post at St Barty's School as Class Three's new form-teacher, where he quickly befriends two of the children: Melanie Brace-Girdle and Thomas Grey. It was adapted into a children's television series of the same title and produced for the ITV network by TVS. Carpenter portrays an eighties school in a welcoming, recognisable way with moments and humour that would be relatable in the present.

Class 2 enjoyed this amusing story of a teacher with magic powers and the come-uppance of an unpleasant class mate; so it was a popular book.

Hamish Bigmore finds himself on the wrong end of Mr Majeika's powers after causing problems with his fellow students. But Mr Majeika's magic saves the day, Class Three and the circus end up on the news and once again Mr Potter, the headmaster, misses it all!
