Description

The Deerhound is closely related to the Irish wolfhound and was the principal contributor to that breed when it was created at the end of the 19th century. This perfect read has strong vocabulary, and exciting plot twists for intermediate readers who love animals. With the help of some friendly foxes, Alfie learns to live in the wild, but he never stops thinking of Charlie and trying to find his way home. It is however a true sighthound which has been selected for generations to pursue game; consequently, most Deerhounds will be eager to chase. That does not mean it needs a large house to live in; however it should have regular access to free exercise in a large fenced or otherwise "safe" area.

The chapters were a good length for the story to be split up into bedtime instalments, and the book was a good length for this age, ie not very long.Meanwhile, Charlie doesn t know what to do but one thing is for sure: he ll never stop looking for his dear hound. In outward appearance, the Scottish Deerhound is similar to the Greyhound, but larger and more heavily boned with a rough-coat. With the eventual demise of the clan systems in Scotland, these hunting dogs became sporting animals for landowners and the nobility, but were also bred and hunted with by common folk when feasible. It’s a fab story all-round and perfect for sharing at bedtime: with beautiful, expressive illustrations, it’s gentle enough to help wind down, but with sufficient (low-key) excitement to maintain interest and keep the pages turning.

Illustrations are perfect, the book rolled along pleasantly and made me want to rush out and get a deerhound puppy tomorrow! The new fashion was for stalking and shooting, which required only a tracking dog to follow the wounded animal, using a collie or similar breed. In outward appearance, the Scottish Deerhound is similar to the Greyhound, but larger and more heavily boned. While not as fast as a Greyhound on a smooth, firm surface, once the going gets rough or heavy they can outrun a Greyhound. My 10 year old daughter heard enough of the story to wish to read it in her own time, though it was a bit young for her. With the help of some friendly foxes, Alfie learns to live in the wild, but he never stops thinking of Charlie. When Charlie and his Mum go away overnight to a wedding they put Alfie into kennels, but he manages to escape – only to find himself far from home, frightened and in the middle of a thunderstorm. The Scottish Deerhound, or simply the Deerhound, is a British breed of large sighthound, once bred to hunt the red deer by coursing.

Meanwhile, Charlie doesn’t know what to do – but one thing is for sure: he’ll never stop looking for his dear hound. If that doesn't work, there may be a network issue, and you can use our self test page to see what's preventing the page from loading.

Luckily for Alfie he befriends two friendly foxes who have compassion on him and end up helping him learn the ways of the woods, and survive until his owner can find him. Deerhounds should not be raised with access only to leash walking (or any form of "forced" exercise) or a small yard, this would be detrimental to their health and development as their bones grow very quickly and the young dogs need to play and rest according to their instincts. The harsh, wiry coat in modern dogs is only seen in self-coloured various shades of gray (blue-gray is preferred).
