As it was Sunday, I’d popped to Aldi and picked up a whole chicken, Yorkshire puddings, potatoes, carrots, broccoli - you know, all the important stuff. I wasn’t expecting the cheapest model (by far) on this list to come out near the top of my testing, but the Tower Air Fryer is a budget powerhouse. It lets you see when your sausages are starting to brown and need a turn, or if your chips need a good shake to evenly coat them in oil. Gorgeous fluffy wedges, reduced oil use, quick and easy navigation, stop and start buttons, phone notifications throughout to make the process so much more satisfying, the list goes on.

It’s a simple drawer-operated air fryer with a ceramic-coated cooking grate insert inside the non-stick cooking section. If you’re looking to reducing your kitchen gadget count it might be a good bet as it amalgamates lots of cooking tasks into one single unit.Gareth Butterfield puts a top-spec Salter Dual Cook Pro and a range-topping Ninja Foodi Max to the test, while Stacey Dutton tries out the Proscenic T22 Air Fryer with 13 Presets and Shake Reminder and Beth Shufflebotham gives the Innoteck 16L air fryer oven a whirl.

The Vizion viewing windows, built into the front of each drawer allow you to keep a constant eye on the progress without ever needing to open the compartments again, saving you more time and energy in the kitchen.

Having taken the chicken out and keeping it warm in foil, I added my roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and Yorkshire puds, and in no time, my whole roast was complete. There wasn’t any need to turn the bacon halfway through cooking – the rashers cooked evenly all the way through, with all the fat fully rendered – so I was pretty pleased with the results for this one. It also has a handful of clever extra features, including a ‘favourite’ option for quick access to your favourite recipes.

For example, a model like the new Innoteck Air Fryer Oven With Rotisserie And Dehydrator will do more. This is one of the largest air fryers on the market and comes towards the top end of the whistles and bells - in that it has a couple of extra functions and a number of extra settings. The range goes from 60°C to 200°C, which gives you a lot of scope to bake or dehydrate foods at a lower temperature, or blast them at a more powerful heat to create that delicious crispy, fried finish. I have had it for about 4 weeks and during this time I have not used my conventional oven to make a meal.It comes with an LED digital display so you can monitor the temperature and cooking times and illustrates its pre-set modes as icons: a drumstick for poultry, a cupcake for baked goods, a steak for meat and so on.

The rashers on the top shelf were quickly blown over by the force of the fan so I had to rearrange them after five minutes to make sure they cooked evenly. It is an all-in-one powerhouse that fries, bakes and roasts with less fat and is quicker compared with conventional cooking methods. We also found fitting the spit onto the chicken and then into the oven quite fiddly and could have done with clearer instructions and tips for getting the best results.
