For those looking for a smokier formula, try the Bunnahabhain Moine whisky, which contains Islay peat. Throughout this fruitful period, he established a healthy rapport with the great and the good of the local wine scene, affording him access to their distinguished cellars.

If you enjoy whisky from this island, we offer a selection of even more Islay whiskies, so you can take your pick. Bunnahabhain (pronounced "bun-na-ha-ven" and meaning "mouth of the river" in Gaelic) is a whisky distillery located on the remote island of Islay just off the west coast of Scotland. On the nose: A marked departure from the prior dram, this has a rich, buttery aspect to it that is evident from the first whiff. There’s a residual aftertaste of dried autumn leaves (not that I’m in the habit of eating them, but you get what I mean) as a sole marker of what is otherwise an undistinguished finish. it's not that high but it's prominent, maybe it needed more in the palate to become 'one of the best 18's' as it's said, more smoke perhaps? I also appreciate the fact that Bunnahabhain have started edging up the ABV in their spirits generally. Unusually for an Islay single malt, our 18 year old is unpeated, allowing the sweet coastal character of our island to shine through. Neither Whiskybase nor any of its group companies (including any subsidiary, affiliate or holding company), directors, officers and employees shall in any way be liable or responsible (whether directly, indirectly, consequential) for any costs, claims, damages, liabilities and other expenses, including any consequential loss, suffered by you resulting from your use of the Service.

For nearly two decades this wonderful 'uisge beatha' absorbs the sea air that surrounds the distillery. The Islay Distillery Company initially owned Bunnahabhain, but the Highland Distilleries Company took over in 1887. Bunnahabhain Distillery, nestled on the northeastern shores of the mystical Isle of Islay in Scotland, is celebrated as a hidden gem among the island's distilleries.

Immediate warming peatiness drift to a sweet Oloroso sherry influence with rich oak, balanced with delicate pepper. Further, we reserve the right to modify, change, discontinue the Service, add or remove features, update the Service, change its appearance, temporarily and permanently, at any time, in whole or any part thereof. It’s tucked in the north eastern corner of the island, next to Caol Ila, and near the town of Port Askaig, which offers ferry service to the nearby island of Jura.

Bunnahabhain also features older vintage releases, highlighting the exceptional quality of aged whiskies from its warehouses. A marriage of three peated drams including an Oloroso Finish, Bourbon Matured and Rum Finish, it has flavours reminiscent of rum and raisin ice cream, our Master Blender, Julieann Fernandez's, favourite! In the mouth: Surprisingly quite different from the nose, this starts with the meaty nuttiness of cashews in the front of the mouth.

They contain great and good (and sometimes not so good) whisky from folks who are interested in my opinion, or who are merely keen to spread the love around. Behind it, the oak tree easily wakes up with something like a subliminal smoke, but really only very, very subtle. The eighteen-year journey of this whisky commences in a place that captivates the heart with its breathtaking views out into the vast expanse of water that is the Sound of Islay, almost hidden in the remote north-eastern corner of this magical isle. The newest member of the Bunnahabhain core range family, this first batch release of a 30 year whisky is one of our oldest single malts. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. For this one, I used cask strength Bullet Bourbon, Vermouth Terino and Carpano Antica, along with Tom Foolery Applejack. In 2021, Master Distiller, Stephanie Macleod, handpicked Cote Rotie red wine casks from the Rhône Valley. When I saw “12 Year Old Cask Strength,” I made the mental association with the Redbreast 12 Year Cask Strength expression.
