Those changes range from streamlined combat abilities to less prescriptive character creation, and the aim is to let players make the adventurer they want without feeling pigeon-holed into a specific build. To solve both issues, Wizards is rejiggering monster stats and abilities, buffing some and nerfing others.

It should be noted that while it may at first appear that other creatures have gone missing, they likely haven’t.

It will simply have to make its attack roll with disadvantage if it knows where you are but still can’t see you. Thank you, as someone that owns virtually every book Mordenkainen’s draws from I was debating whether there was any point in getting it. The seminal tabletop role-playing game turns 50 in 2024, and developers are busy building the game’s next version to go on sale during that window. It will also give Wizards of the Coast more elbow room to expand its multiverse, either relaunching classic settings like Dragonlance and Spelljammer or unleashing entirely new settings built from scratch. Monsters of the Multiverse was included on Kotaku's 2022 "The 10 Best Tabletop Roleplaying Books Of 2022" list — Claire Jackson commented that both the updated monsters and player race options make Monsters of the Multiverse a contender for "fourth core book".

Plus, all races have been carefully balanced to be more compatible with your table, no matter the story you’re telling.

But at the last minute I realised that all the monsters lore when out of the window, which was a good third of the previous books. It’s fair to say that over those 8 years a lot of information has flooded the game table and at times it can be difficult to wade through the oceans of stat blocks and lore. I think the better path for this book would have been to take all of the monsters from the setting books and include them here, to match up with the first chapter. As well as scrubbing ability score recommendations that often shoehorn them into specific classes, these are multiversal versions for inclusion on any world. Pew-pew spells make combat a little simpler, but if I wanted pew-pew spells I’d just turn on Dark Souls and run Soul Arrow.

Andrew Stretch, for TechRaptor, commented that while there are quality of life improvements in the design changes, the book seems aimed at newcomers and not towards people with "an expansive 5e library". Of course, there will always be space at the table for such settings, Spelljammer is being released later in the year after all, but knowing that the importance of homebrew is recognised higher up, bodes well for the growing number of creative players and DMs out there.Updated formats make monsters more efficient to run for the veteran Dungeon Master and easy to pick up for the new. The Monsters of the Multiverse book collects 30 monstrous races into a single resource book, though it's worth noting that they have appeared in other sourcebooks in the past. Gamer Network Limited, Gateway House, 28 The Quadrant, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1DN, United Kingdom, registered under company number 03882481.

Several entirely new monsters have been introduced into Monsters of the Multiverse, such as the Dolphin Delighter, a fey version of a dolphin that can teleport and use telepathic abilities. This being said, there are still a few definite ones, mostly when it comes to Deities, such as Jubilex (still very Chaotic Evil). Instead, it appears that Wizards will be taking a far more incremental approach this time, weaving in changes both large and small while still maintaining a connection to what came before. Other playable species in the new sourcebook include the Fairy and Haregon species introduced in last year’s Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign book. Feeblemind, geas and imprisonment, as far as I can tell, are history, presumably on the principle that PCs should never be knocked out of the action completely. Monster challenge ratings were not changed; instead, monster stat blocks were adjusted to better represent their challenge rating.
