The annual general meeting at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal also saw the appointment of three new non-executive directors. At the end of Chapter One of "Outside Broadcaster" Eric Robson reveals that his wife Annette counselled him against the writing of his autobiography. At the age of 36 he had risen high in the ranks of English historians and he had the most brilliant prospects.

His documentaries range from Great Railway Journeys of the World to the classic BBC series with the fellwalker Alfred Wainwright. The last time broadcaster and author Eric Robson made a Great Railway Journey of the World was for the BBC. Even in his will he thought of his school; and his last mark of affection, is his bequest of books for the library.Eric Robson, who is one of the directors of the company, was Wainwright’s walking companion in the classic television series. I know very little more about this broadcaster having finished the book than I did at its opening page. He wrote regularly for the leading historical journals and some of his articles and criticisms may be found in the bound volumes of "History To-day," in the School Library. He showed how a poet can take the most ordinary-seeming place and make it extraordinary – in such a way that every reader looks at his or her own place and sees it freshly and more vividly.

Like most people Eric Robson is probably known to most only as the "Man who accompanied Alfred Wainwright in the fabulous Walking with Wainwright series on TV, or the "Man with a dog on a string" or probably best known to radio listeners as Chairman of Gardeners Question Time. The ability to comment on our stories is a privilege, not a right, however, and that privilege may be withdrawn if it is abused or misused. I remember going into my first programme and it being so nerve-wracking and Eric was very helpful,” she says. Eric Robson is probably best known as the chairman of one of the longest running broadcast programmes in the world - Gardeners' Question Time on Radio 4.Still, his fingers are green enough to roll his eyes when I enquire what he feels about the latest trend of ‘vegan gardening’ recently suggested by Matthew Appleby, deputy editor of Horticulture Week, who has deemed bird feeders and killing slugs beyond the pale. It’s entirely my decision,” he insists, his mellifluous Cumbrian drawl booming about the empty hall of Manchester Grammar School where we are sitting ahead of his final broadcast.
