We met with Cellar Master Michel Fauconnet to visit Laurent-Perrier's renovated cellars and conduct a vertical tasting of Brut Vintage and Grand Siècle (all from magnum) alongside Jancis Robinson MW. Laurent Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut NV is one of the most widely-recognised and popular Rosé Champagnes. A legendary, lively and elegant champagne, Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée is exquisitely balanced, with notes of vine peach and white fruits, with hints of honeysuckle, grapefruit and apricot flavours very present on the finish. Michel Fauconnet joined Laurent-Perrier in 1973 and, since 2004, he has been the house's 3rd Cellar Master. Post First World War I, Laurent-Perrier was very sucessful producing around 50,000 cases of Champagne unfortunatley when war broke out the business was hit hard. The maceration, lasting from 48-72 hours depending on the harvest, helps the extraction of the colour and the development of the full aromatic richness of the Pinot Noir.

Laurent-Perrier is to be found out in the countryside, in extensive grounds near Tours-sur-Marne, in contrast to the great majority of big Champagne houses which operate from town sites in Epernay and Reims. Its bubbles are insistent, finely carved and add to the early sensations of lightness and energy yet also carry the wine long into a balanced, refined finish. Elegant and fruity at the same time with a quick invitation from bright, pure cherryish notes and then filled out handsomely by whiffs of chalky soils and well-integrated, rich and uplifting yeast-driven scents, this wine manages to be both vigorous and layered at one and the same time. This rose comes direct from Laurent-Perrier in 2022, these magnums are original disgorgement in the last quarter of 2004 which would make the dominant year in the blend 1998 or 1999.

He found his inspiration in the rather stubby bottles manufactured in the time of King Henri IV, adding the monogrammed ‘LP’ shield. Since 2020 Alexandra's daughter, Lucie Pereyre de Nonancourt has taken on the global role of Brand Ambassador for Grand Siècle.

The house was acquired by the Nonancourt family in 1949 and, for 50 years, Bernard de Nonancourt dedicated his life to innovating and perfecting Laurent-Perrier champagne. The House was built around 4 strong convictions: blending, a unique style, the Chardonnay grape variety and innovation.

Though a replacement for Laurent Perrier's traditional Brut NV expression, it is far more than simply a new label, with an entirely new composition.Laurent-Perrier was established in Tours-sur-Marne in 1812 and was the first family-owned independent Champagne House. The latter, widow and mother of four children, acquired the Domaine Laurent-Perrier and ran the business while two of her sons, Maurice and Bernard, joined the French Resistance.

Michel Fauconnet 2004 - 2023 | Joined Laurent-Perrier in 1973, became the 3rd Cellar Master of the House, after respectively Edouard Leclerc in 1950 and Alain Terrier in 1983. We tasted some rich and generous vins clairs with Chef de Cave Michel Fauconnet and sampled previews of upcoming Vintage 2008 and future Grand Siècle NV.
