His self beyond consciousness, however – his ‘second self’ – had long since put such feelings into a story.

Collected Stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa : Ryunosuke

Regrets upon regrets are poured into the page and it makes you want to just tell the author that it's okay. Here is a quick description and cover image of book The Life of a Stupid Man written by Ryunosuke Akutagawa which was published in January 1, 1927. It highlights the stages of life in which Akutagawa reflects on his life, up till the moment of his death bed. Later, however, he came to realize that the contract saddled him with all the obligations and the company with none. The observations and assumptions one character makes differs from the other and you become unable to tell who is lying and who is telling the truth. This period was a productive one, as has already been noted, and the success of stories like Mikan (Mandarin Oranges, 1919) and Aki (Autumn, 1920) prompted him to turn his attention increasingly to modern materials.

Akutagawa published the story Rashōmon in the magazine Teikoku bungaku (Imperial Literature) in 1915. an autobiographical approach that is reminiscent of dazai's no longer human but differs in the fact that it is not disguised with fabrications and under the guise of fiction. When I reached the end I was overwhelmed by the wisdom Akatagawa seemed to possess, and was very surprised to find that he died by suicide at the age of just 35, which of course meant he wrote the autobiography of his short life also in his 30s. I haven’t read many stories by Japanese authors so I thought perhaps this could be a taste-tester of sorts.

They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th-century California and the Russian steppe. In this letter, Akutagawa describes his meticulous plans for suicide; he had rejected drowning because he was a strong swimmer, death by hanging because it was unsightly.
