Voelker, using the pen name Robert Traver, wrote this novel shortly after being defeated in his bid for re-election for district attorney of Marquette County, MI and deciding to focus on his private law practice. The characters are as fresh as when they were first created, the tension high, and the cross- examinations and legal chicanery full of suspense. It was funny, the fine suave marshmallow phrases a lawyer learned to spin to let a prospective client gently know he must be prepared to fork over some heavy dough.

I have to say that not only did I thoroughly enjoy the well written story, but I learned more about our legal system than in both my high school and college civics classes combined.Voelker, an avid fly fisherman and lifelong resident of the community where this novel is set, had a wit and intelligence that shined throughout these 450 pages and kept the story from bogging down. Our defense attorney and the narrator of the story, Paul Beigler, needs to win this case for a couple of reasons. Traver delivers straightforward literature; articulate, intelligent and expecting the same of his reader. P. for fly-fishing and drinking (one personal connection; my mentor was his friend and did his share of drinking and fishing with him; I heard some of the stories).

The murderer confessed to his crime and turned himself in on the night of the murder, so our hero, former DA Paul Beigler, plans his defense around a variation of the insanity plea. The second half is 250 pages of courtroom drama, and the details are exhausting, with some more hammy dialogue thrown in. May have some underlining and highlighting of text and some writing in the margins, but there are no missing pages or anything else that would compromise the readability or legibility of the text. Martin's in 1958, Robert Traver's Anatomy of a Murder immediately became the number one best seller in America, and was subsequently turned into the successful and now classic Otto Preminger film. Unless… Biegler's got a few tricks up his sleeve, and his old buddy Parnell has more up both of his, and between them – and some surprising items turned up as they look into the details of the case – they're ready to put up a fight to get the Lieutenant free. I surveyed the clutter of mail, mostly junk and routine stuff, that had accumulated during my absence.

As a result the book is often very earnest and lacks the focus and impact that were carried by later works in this genre. Maybe lawyers love this level of detail, but as a casual listener, I found the tedium extremely annoying. It is not only the most popular courtroom drama in American fiction, but one of the most popular novels of our time. In short, Anatomy of a Murder is a richer legal novel than any I've read, and I wish my library carried more by the author. The room was stuffy so I opened the window and sat looking down upon the silent and empty city square, watching my smoke drift lazily out the window, brooding sleepily about the tangled past and future.
