Description

But it is possible to find lines of the most famous poets of the Roman world scratched into the walls of Pompeii, and Milnor provides a systematic overview of how and why this literary re-production occurred, what it indicates about literacy and learning, and how differently the ancients viewed writing in public spaces. Generation, regeneration, again, again, as in a ritual, with blood-stained vestments and nail-torn hands, children of Merlin, chasing a gleam. It's a timely concern for 2023, as stoicism is experiencing an unexpected bit of popularity in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. Richardson pieces together an array of evidence, from various finds and graffiti to the early excavation reports, to assess the experiences of both the male clients and the female prostitutes.

Beard even questions the date of the eruption using archaeological rather than historical sources (possibly corrupted in the middle ages).

We have your Babylons and your Pompeiis, your Caesars and your chromium-plated (vital-ingredient impregnated) artifacts. Charmed Life arrives in an explosion of magic in this edition illustrated by Alison Bryant and introduced by Katherine Rundell. Street Life, Earning a Living: Baker, Banker and Garum Maker (who ran the city), The Pleasure of the Body: Food, Wine, Sex and Baths, these chapter headings give a surprising insight into the workings of a Roman town. Beware that the Ercolano bus stop is much less frequently used (and therefore can be skipped without notice) especially in the off season. Classicist Mary Beard has had a great time rooting about that ghostly place, and she has brought it quite splendidly back to life.Though readers learn about the disaster that engulfed the famed Roman town in 79 AD, the compelling book has more to offer than lessons on history and ancient technology. It ends where the reader has to make up the rest of the story on their own, but the good news is they survive the volcano. Resurrecting Pompeii provides an in-depth study of a unique site from antiquity with information about a population who all died from the same known cause within a short period of time. Those few slips should have been edited out and the cover does not relate to the drama of the story which is a shame as it may mislead and thus miss a wide readership. Pompeii itself had a long history and was recovering from an earthquake when the eruption in 79 occurred.
