Description

Geographers’ Map Company was founded in 1936 by Phyllis Pearsall MBE (1906-1996) who, encouraged by her father Alexander Gross, took on the ambitious task of publishing up-to-date street mapping of London. I expect most Londoners will look up their home area first, or areas they know well, to compare to now.

London: Central London Handy Map from A-Z publishers is an indexed mini-pocket sized street plan of the centre of London, ideal for visitors and containing a variety of tourist relevant information. Both the congestion charging zone boundary and the low emission zone boundary are included on this mapping which also features safety camera locations with their maximum speed limit. The lines on the black and white map are the Northern Line, Central Line, Piccadilly Line and Bakerloo Line. The ultra smooth finish and the latex base of the inks provide vivid colour graphics with high-definition detail. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password.

I love looking at old maps of London so was pleased to come across this London A-Z Street Atlas – Historical Edition. In one scheme, the letters JIHGFEDCBA represent the digits 1 to 9 and 0, so that HFD would be 357, indicating a publication date of March 1957. It’s sais she walked the streets of London for up to 18 hours a day hand plotting the street alignment and compiling ancillary information including house numbers along principal thoroughfares. When the time comes to redecorate, the wallpaper is so easy to remove that HP provide a warranty for clean removal making it ideal for exhibition graphics or rented properties. So it’s no surprise to the find a large section included in the book on the London County Council street name changes.

Albans, Potters Bar, Waltham Cross, Epping, Brentwood, Thurrock, Stanford-le-Hope, Gravesend, Wrotham, Sevenoaks, Westerham, Oxted, Redhill, Reigate, Leatherhead, Great Bookham, Woking, Egham, Windsor, Slough, Chalfont St. The index section lists streets, embassies, legations, commonwealth representatives and hospitals covered by this atlas. Coverage extends north-west to Grantham and Boston in Lincolnshire, west beyond Bedford and Luton, and, unlike the corresponding folded map, south only to the northern section of the M25 and Chelmsford. From the peaks of the Picos de Europa to the sun-kissed shores of Sicily, from Alpine passes to dramatic gorges, atmospheric forests and fabul. Laminated and mounted onto foam centred board for rigidity, appearance, and the ability to be tacked with pins. The last page of the atlas features an overview map of the congestion charging zone with helpful notes about this zone and the inside back cover features an overview map of the low emission zone area. So Pearsall founded the Geographers’ Map Company to print them herself, and began selling them in 1936.
