The last story combines meeting a famous actor, aliens visiting Earth and a giant Bumblekitten. How can this go wrong? The book features three stories, two at eleven chapters, and a short story that is just one chapter long, written as the intermission. Mervin thinks everything is boring. He even thinks The Crimson Swine is "...stupid and dumb!" When Gary learns of a new villain in town threatening the factory of the town's favourite biscuit makers, he knows he must do something. But how? He has to look after Mervin. Then, readers see Brooklyn and Carl in The Aquarium Store and learn more about what scares Carl. They also see how caring Brooklyn and Gary are in secretly helping their friend. Harrell applies enough humor and absurdity to entertain upper elementary and middle grade readers with the antics of these three friends. The artwork brings out details to enhance the dialogue. Readers see how much these three care for each other and those around them.

Meanwhile, when not in costume, Batpig is Gary Yorkshire, a normal pig/boy going to school. Every morning he must pass a butcher shop. The owner stands out the front and calls him all sorts of names and tells lots of meat jokes. Things get even worse for Gary when he has to look after his VERY demanding younger cousin named Mervin. Each character brings plenty of humour, heart, wit and sarcasm and readers will each have their favourites - I think Carl who loves hanging out in toilet bowls is mine. In amongst the laughs, gross-out scenes and potty-jokes, there are some nice messages about identity and friendship. Anyone who has felt like the one left out of a friendship trio will relate to Carl who is kept out of the superhero secret thanks to his reputation as a bit of a blabbermouth. Join the newly “recruited” members of Amanda Waller’s infamous Task Force X (aka the Suicide Squad), Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and King Shark, as they set out on an impossible mission to Kill the Justice League. Drop into an expansive and dynamic open-world Metropolis ravaged by Brainiac’s invasion and terrorized by the heroes who once protected it. The second story (the short one), features Batpig’s classmates Brooklyn and Carl in Aquarium Dreams. The friends are visiting the local pet shop where Carl is saving to buy a top-of-the-range fish tank (he’s a fish).

There was nothing special about sixth-grader pig Gary Yorkshire. He enjoyed playing video games, reading comics, taking mud baths and hanging out with his friends, Carl the fish and Brooklyn the bat. Czytacie czasami komiksy? Jeśli tak polecam zarówno pierwszą jak i drugą cześć komiksu przygód nieustraszonego BatPiga. At first, he's hungry all the time, finds he's suddenly really strong, and needs hardly any sleep. Then he begins to float and can move stuff with his mind! He has to tell someone! Brooklyn can hardly believe it, but sure enough her pig friend can suddenly fly. This is HUGE! Should they tell Carl? They are all close friends but they both know he is terrible at keeping secrets. When Carl learns the truth he wreaks his revenge for being excluded - completely by accident! Strengths: This is based on a character from Ross' comics in Wink, and hits the middle school sweet spot for goofy while cleverly working in issues of personal identity. The city setting is interesting, and Gary's parents are both alive! I also enjoyed how characters from Gary's regular life are the ones who become the villains he must fight. The illustration style is fresh, and I enjoyed the muted orange and purple-toned color palette, which was a nice change for a super hero story and gives it an air of gravitas. (I would have expected bright primary colors.) A great follow up to Wink. Weaknesses: Aren't brand names like Pop Tarts meant to be avoided? Granted, this information was probably gleaned from reading Writer's Digest in the 1980s, but there were a couple of brand names used, and that seemed odd. (I seem to remember that BandAids and Xerox were to be avoided in favor of bandages and photocopies.) I received an electronic ARC from PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Young Readers Group through NetGalley and also approved through Edelweiss+. Gary and his friends Brook and Carl are enjoying their favourite sandwiches at Ye Olde Sandwich Shop, when the topic of tests come up. Gary might be superhero Batpig, but his memory about homework and tests is less than super. There are two tests are the next day and Gary hasn't studied.

Gary, Carl & Brook are excited to be going to Camp Mouldy Snout. Soon after arriving, Gary feels bad about Brook being assigned to a different cabin from he and Carl. Carl is just keen to try out some archery! When Pigs Fly is a very entertaining and engaging start to a new series and I look forward to more adventures with Batpig and his friends, the next title is due out in 2022. Batpig is ready to swoop into the lives of middle-grade readers and is set to bring action, life lessons and gross-out giggles. This is a hoot! I will definitely be reading more of this series. You need to have a sense of humor to really appreciate this fantastic book. I found myself smiling and laughing through most of this book as Gary, Brooklyn, and Carl discover a new super hero. I do think some younger readers might not fully understand or “get” all the laughs/puns that are written in this book but they’ll still enjoy the story. I think a reader’s age, maturity and life’s experiences helps them fully appreciate this book. Batpig may suddenly have superpowers, but nothing can prevent him stepping in chewing gum on the footpath. His mind begins to spin on inventing a solution. All superheroes need villains and Gary finds his in the form of Carl’s pet lizard who morphs into Repto-man and a crazed butcher who is on a mission to take over the world. Batpig is going to need all of his swine superpowers and a little help from his friends but with Carl feeling neglected and Brooklyn’s fear of flying it isn’t going to be easy to save his own bacon and the city. He pays the price of cheating, putting his whole school in danger. Can BatPig fix it, or does Gary have all the power this time? Harrell’s full-color graphic-novel charmer is over-the-top fun, filled with fast pacing, abundant silliness (pig puns abound!), and a well-developed plot and characters, that nevertheless does not rely on humor as its sole support . . .The social tribulations of being part of a trio of friends will resonate with middle-grade audiences. This is an absolute must-read for fans of Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man series. Readers will go hog wild for this lovable hero.”— Kirkus, starred review This is a book that I can see children giggling along with. Asides from the humour the three friends were wonderful characters who always looked out for one another and were on the side of ‘good’.

Gary Yorkshire loves great-tasting sandwiches, mud baths, video games and hanging out with his friends, Brooklyn the Bat and Carl the Fish. Gary features more in the 'saving the day' antics than his superhero alter ego this time, and the repercussions in Camp Danger are hilarious. I love the style of Rob Harrell's Super Hog and the personalities of his friends shine through in these episodes. One day after playing Go Fish (a favourite game of Carl's), Gary tries playing a prank on Brooklyn. This misfires and Brooklyn bites Gary in fright. She apologises, but little do they know that Gary will soon be flying through the skies like his favourite comic superhero The Crimson Swine! Batpig: Too Pig to Fail is a children’s comic book-style graphic novel that is filled with adventure and features a new superhero, a pig called Gary Yorkshire, and his classmates. The stories are all very imaginative, a whole lot of fun, and enjoyable from beginning to end. They are filled to the brim with comedy and I loved that the short story plays a role in the last one.Weaknesses: Batpig's powers could be used for better things, but then, so could Dog Man's. It's enough for him just to save his neighborhood. Strengths: Gary and his friends are such a fun group. They support each other (Gary and Brooklyn are contributing secretly to Carl's aquarium), but also give each other a hard time (they make fun of his attitude toward being Batpig and wearing his uniform all the time). There are lots of fun details about school that ring absolutely true, and I loved that the kids in class all supported and thanked the hard working custodian. The aliens are goofy, but set up the scene for Batpig to save the day nicely. The illustrations are colorful and fun. This graphic novel is the closest thing I've seen to old style comic books like Richie Rich. Quite delightful Gary feels a little left out as his friends have made their own friends, but after a chance encounter with something in the lake by moonlight, he makes a special friend of his own. He has left his BatPig costume at home on purpose, but soon new friends and old are in danger and he must make a choice of saving lives and revealing his true identity or watching something terrible happen.
