Are hobnobs vegan? It’s a good question, and the answer depends on the type of hobnob you’re looking for. Traditional hobnobs contain milk and butter, so they’re not vegan. However, some manufacturers do offer vegan-friendly versions of the classic treat, which are made with vegan margarine instead of butter. If you’re looking for a vegan-friendly version of the beloved biscuit, it’s best to read the ingredients list and look for a vegan-friendly version. Roll the dough into small balls in your hands and pop them on the baking tray. Squish them down until they’re the size you want them. Don’t forget to leave plenty of room between the hobnobs as they’ll spread when they cook. Rich Tea biscuits are a British institution. Developed in the 17th century, they were traditionally an upper class treat between meals. So, get that pinky finger at the ready as it’s time to get fancy. In a #tbt kind of a way. 3. Bourbon creams Homemade Chocolate Hobnobs are the perfect treat. Easy to make, tasty, filled with yummy oats, and covered in smooth chocolate. There’s nothing better dunked in tea!

This version of homemade chocolate hobnobs is much healthier and they’re really easy to make. They only call for 7 ingredients that are easy to get hold of at most supermarket. As you can see, there are no animal byproducts in this recipe. The gluten-free version contains almost identical ingredients, except the wholemeal wheat flour is replaced with gluten-free wholegrain oat flour. The chocolate chip Hobnob ingredients are:Oats – Real hobnobs use a combination of jumbo oats and rolled oats. Either will work great on their own though. Rolled Oats, Wholemeal Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Oil (Palm), Plain Chocolate Chips [Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Butter, Soya Lecithin, Natural Flavouring], Partially Inverted Sugar Syrup, Sodium Bicarbonate, Ammonium Bicarbonate & Salt. There are many ‘Free From’ brands that are dairy-free and therefore vegan. However, this list looks only at accidentally vegan biscuits, so these aren’t included here. List of Vegan Biscuits Salt – When teamed up with unsalted butter, adding salt gives the best control of the overall flavour.

NOTE: when I say biscuit in this post, I’m referring to the British word for cookie. I think of a biscuit as a certain type of cookie: one which is thin and always dry and crunchy, never soft or chewy. What I do not mean by biscuit is a scone-type-thing. Okay. Cool. Let’s proceed. Plain Chocolate Chips [Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Butter, Emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), Natural Flavoring] Unlike in the US, UK Oreos are made with a plant-based recipe as standard. Our suggestion: get a glass of cashew milk at the ready and dunk to your heart's content. A biscuit that has been named after a bodily function does not deserve respect, frankly. Digestive biscuits should never be anyone’s first choice. If a Digestive biscuit was a person, it would be Ross Geller. A digestive biscuit will always be there, should you need it, but ideally you’re never going to be in a position where that’s a top priority. Their performance when dunked into tea is laughable. They leave a trail of crumbs wherever they go and overall, they’re boring as hell. If you love Digestives, you are a Tory. Certainly! You can double or even triple the recipe if you want to make a larger batch of hob nobs. Make sure you have enough baking trays and space in your oven to accommodate the additional dough. It may also require a slightly longer baking time, so keep an eye on them as they cook.

After much legal and technical argument, it was determined that a Scottish Snowball is a cake, mainly because it looks like a cake, it's not out of place on a plate full of cakes, and it feels like a cake to eat. The hobnobs turned out amazingly well, probably even better than the shop-bought version because these used butter (not palm oil) so had even more flavour! They’re oaty, crisp and dunkable! As chocolate hobnobs usually have a kind of cross-hatched drip pattern on them (not sure how else to describe it ) which I couldn’t recreate, I just drizzled them with extra chocolate for a decorative effect. That step is completely optional, as is actually coating them with chocolate – plain HobNobs are a thing – but, to be honest, why would you go for plain if there’s a chocolate option?

Hobnobs comes from the verb hob nob, which means to mix socially, generally with people from a higher class, so you’ll have people who say “hobnob” over tea or a biscuit.Use whatever chocolate you find palatable. Sometimes I will use 70/80% in my cooking and add a little extra sweetener like honey/agave/maple syrup. Dark chocolate is almost always dairy free unless it’s a cheap brand where they will add crappy fillers. My fave brands to eat and use in cooking are ( also allergy-friendly) The company introduced the world to the biscuits by marketing them as “Hokkobs” in 1985. A digestive biscuit is made of rolled and jumbo oats, and it is marketed as such. Despite the fact that the original Hobnobs are vegan, there are no animal ingredients in them, only vegetable oil derived from palm fruit, which is highly controversial for its impact on the environment and animal lives. Palm oil has a bad reputation, which is due to its use in pollutive mono-crops that kill animals, and the fact that it is necessary for critical habitats (rain forests) to be bulldozed. Between 1999 and 2015, 100,000 Bornean orangutans died as a result of the demand for conventional palm oil.
