Luke Carlton helps stop an attack on London, and becomes a full-fledged SIS member, and is given the job of case officer who runs agents. In 2009 he published Far Horizons, a much praised account of his life as an inveterate traveller and explorer. When he was 16, Gardner met the Arabian explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger, and was invited to the explorer's home in Chelsea. Gardner joined BBC World as a producer and reporter in 1995, and became the BBC's first full-time Gulf correspondent in 1997, before being appointed BBC Middle East correspondent in 1999.

Written by someone who has been there, done that and knows what it’s about, Crisis is a thriller you just can’t put down. Britain is not the only country to be punishing Russia with sanctions - the US has gone further and Germany, for example, has now postponed giving the green light to the massive Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia - but the UK is in the forefront of pushing for penalties. In September 2015 Gardner was featured in an episode of the BBC's family history programme Who Do You Think You Are? But Gardner is clearly determined to highlight the little publicised role of the Special Forces in protecting the country in increasingly troubled times. His attackers then plucked from his trouser pocket a miniature edition of the Koran (Gardner kept these to give as presents). Written by someone who has been there, done that and knows what it's about, Crisis is a thriller you just can't put down. In 2016 Gardner teamed up with Benedict Allen in the BBC Two two-part documentary Birds of Paradise: The Ultimate Quest.

The documentary focuses on the recent gains by Ukrainian forces and how it could provoke President Putin into using tactical nuclear weapons against Ukrainian forces engaged in the Russo-Ukrainian War. When her husband was in the Whitechapel hospital, London, she would transform his scruffy NHS room and arrange 'intimate dinners for two' against all the hospital regulations (but with the nurses' blessing). One of the pleasures of reading it, I tell Gardner, is that between the first chapter about the attack and the last about his rehabilitation, it puts him back on his feet. The second Luke Carlton thriller, Ultimatum, was also a Sunday Times top 10 bestseller, as was the third, Outbreak.During an expedition to Papua New Guinea, they sought the elusive birds-of-paradise (a life-long ambition of Gardner's as an experienced birdwatcher), including the King of Saxony. Luke Carlton was a Special Boat Service commando, and currently he works under contract to MI6 for some of the most dangerous missions they get. He finishes by urging the audience: 'It is a mountain we all need to climb to convince everyone that we can all live happily together - as we can. Often described as coldly calculating, like the chess player and judo fighter that he is, his speech on Monday resembled more that of an angry dictator than a shrewd strategist.

He spent time backpacking in Greece, during his gap year, and found an ad for a ticket that would take him to Manila, located in the Philippines. He joined BBC World to be a producer and a reporter for them, and became BBC’s first Gulf correspondent, working full time at this post, in the year 1998, and set up office in Dubai. They went to Riyadh in pursuit of a story - an analysis of al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia - and became the story themselves. In 2011, Gardner presented Tintin's Adventure with Frank Gardner for the BBC, a documentary in which he retraced Hergé's character Tintin's journey from Brussels to Berlin to Moscow on his first ever adventure – Tintin in the Land of the Soviets. Introducing Luke Carlton – ex-Special Boat Service commando, and now under contract to MI6 for some of its most dangerous missions.

The face he presents to camera is fine and unusually still - perfect for a BBC television correspondent: undistracting.
