Description

During 1917 and 1918, Padre Pio himself briefly served in a medical unit of the Italian army. He later offered himself as a spiritual “victim” for an end to the war, accepting suffering as a form of prayer for peace. Once again, he received the wounds of Christ on his body. They would remain with him for 50 years, through a succession of global conflicts. Another scene in the film shows the devil appearing as an androgynous person coming to Padre Pio in confession and being unrepentant for sins, even to the point of denying the existence of God and hell. The parable in sign is equally instructive. My soul is so badly bowed down to earth, it find “looking upwards” toward heavenly realities extremely painful. Christ must make me stand erect again. The coming season as no other is the season of hope, of preparation for the parousia, of longing for the heavenly Jerusalem, of expectation for the returning Lord. Jesus, have mercy. Free me from stooping down to the earthly, the sensual. Straighten me out for heaven. Now! Jesus, have mercy. Sunday– God of mercy and compassion, we believe that those who have died in the Lord are blessed. As we pray for the souls of those who have gone before us, we earnestly ask You, let them rest from their labors here on earth, and remember the good works they accomplished through Your grace. With each kindness we offer today, help us recall that we too will be judged according to our good deeds, and the love we have for one another. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen. You now have the unique opportunity to enrol your Mass Intentions for either the living or the deceased, and have your Mass Cards posted out to you in advance of this 3-day Celebration. Having a Mass celebrated for a person, or a specific request has a long history in the Catholic Church. Requesting a Mass is not only a sign of your own faith and flourishing, but of your heart for those who say these Masses. The offering you make when requesting a Mass will go to support the work of the Capuchin Community worldwide.

Wednesday– Good and Gracious God, today as we pray for the souls of the faithful departed, we remember the comforting words of Jesus: “ Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world”. As You, Lord, so greatly desire the hearts and souls of the created in Your image and likeness, please now call them to Yourself, and welcome them into Your Kingdom, as they welcomed You here on earth in the poor, the naked, the hungry, the thirsty and the imprisoned. We make our prayer in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen. a b Petiprin, Andrew (2 June 2023). "Watching Shia LaBeouf as Padre Pio". Catholic Answers. Although the film does not glorify the communists, there is certainly a tacit approval of their cause in the film's depiction of their unjust working conditions. Jesus draws) you to Himself by the power of love without encroaching in the slightest on your own free will. O Mary, Mother and Queen of the Suffering Souls in Purgatory , pray for them and place our prayers together with yours, that through your almighty intercession, we too may assist them in their suffering. Following the crucifixion of Peter, Linus, who had served as an assistant to the apostle, continued the leadership of the Church, for once the Christian faith had been firmly established in Rome, Peter and Paul had commended Linus to this responsibility. However, because the one-man episcopate had not yet emerged in Rome, we have no way of knowing exactly what duties were expected of Linus. In a letter directed to the Oriental churches, Linus told how Peter's body was taken from the cross by Marcellus, bathed in milk and wine, and embalmed with precious spices.Grobar, Matt (28 March 2023). "Shia LaBeouf Drama 'Padre Pio' From Abel Ferrara Sets Gravitas Ventures Release". Deadline Hollywood . Retrieved 18 April 2023. Padre Pio is harassed by the devil several times in the film, once even physically. In one scene, the devil, in the appearance of a naked woman disrespecting an image of the Virgin Mary, is taunting and discouraging the saint. Let us take care to mortify our selfish spirit which puffs us up, makes us impulsive and leads to aridity of the soul. It’s as if there are two movies in “Padre Pio.” In one, a filmmaker and actor experiment with fiction, history, religion, and therapy. Or the same filmmaker could have told a story about a changing time in a country he loves, revealing how the scars of war shaped the course of its future. Either might have worked individually. Crammed together in a movie that seems intrinsically uninterested in connecting them leads to another late-career misfire for one of the most compelling directors of the ‘80s and ‘90s. We’ll have to wait for his faith-driven masterpiece.

His canonization miracle involved the cure of Matteo Pio Colella, age 7, the son of a doctor who works in the House for Relief of Suffering, the hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. On the night of June 20, 2000, Matteo was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital with meningitis. By morning doctors had lost hope for him as nine of the boy's internal organs had ceased to give signs of life. That night, during a prayer vigil attended by Matteo's mother and some Capuchin friars of Padre Pio's monastery, the child's condition improved suddenly. When he awoke from the coma, Matteo said that he had seen an elderly man with a white beard and a long, brown habit, who said to him: "Don't worry, you will soon be cured." The miracle was approved by the Congregation and Pope John Paul II on 20 December 2001. Life became more complicated after that. Medical doctors, Church authorities, and curiosity seekers came to see Padre Pio. In 1924, and again in 1931, the authenticity of the stigmata was questioned; Padre Pio was not permitted to celebrate Mass publicly or to hear confessions. He did not complain of these decisions, which were soon reversed. However, he wrote no letters after 1924. His only other writing, a pamphlet on the agony of Jesus, was done before 1924. The two Graduals echo their respective Lessons; the first “Forgive” (Day of Atonement), the second, “How lovely are Thy tabernacles” (feast of Tabernacles). The third and fourth Lessons, from the prophets Micheas and Zacharias, are comforting messages in which God reaffirms His readiness to forgive the sins of His people and to grant them good things provided they remain faithful. God is also concerned over the manner in which we fast: “The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness and a great solemnity!” By which our Ember days, of course, are meant. The Orations offer God our festive fast and plead forgiveness. As on other Ember Saturdays, the fifth Lesson is already part of the morning service; the assembled faithful are praying Lauds; the three youths in the fiery furnace prefigure the resurrection of Christ and of Christians. "Padre Pio Review: Movie on mystic misses the mark". The Catholic Weekly. One clear example is when the devil appears to Pio as a naked woman in an extremely graphic and distasteful scene that sees her try to seduce Pio while performing a lewd act.

Prayers (7)

Much is unknown of Linus, to be sure, but it is said that he, at Peter's direction, decreed that all women would now cover their heads when entering a church. In the ancient canon of the Mass, his name is cited after those of Peter and Paul.

Kindness) is agreeable, courteous, and polite with no trace of uncouthness, (it) draws others to imitate… Once Padre Pio realizes it is the devil, the saint chastises the figure, sends him away, and angrily screams “Shut the f*** up! Say Christ is Lord!”The remains of St. Pio rest in the crypt below Santuario di San Pio da Pietrelcina in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. Anderson, John (2 June 2023).
