Description

Another wonderful, charming, thought provoking, entertaining story about my favorite characters living on Scotland Street in Edinburg, Scotland. He wore the shoes to his father’s funeral, and as he and farming neighbours carried him to his final rest, a tear fell from Angus’s eye onto the cap of one of the shoes. As always, many topics are mulled over or discussed: expert knowledge vs pretentiousness; the Dunbar Number of close friends; social climbers; guilt over the amount of water needed to produce coffee.

He is professor emeritus of medical law at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and has served on many national and international bodies concerned with bioethics. There is astute social observances and deep philosophical musings on a range of topics from the mundane to the deep. How can you not love a story where a man named Fat Bob is the answer to the wishes of a woman named Big Lou. Despite the fact that little happens in the way of plot, this book made me laugh out loud many times, boil with fury and frustration.Ladies' Detective Agency series, the Isabel Dalhousie Series, the Portuguese Irregular Verbs series, and the 44 Scotland Street series. Then, after the publication of his highly successful 'No 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency' series, which has sold over twenty million copies, he devoted his time to the writing of fiction and has seen his various series of books translated into over forty-six languages and become bestsellers through the world. The English shoes of which he was proudest were a pair of black brogues, made of soft and supple leather, and bought by his father from the London firm of John Lobb. Sister Maria-Fiore, who's a conventional thinker, will never give the prize to an outré modern artist.

There are tribulations as well as celebrations in this the next instalment in the 44 Scotland Street series. And, further up in the New Town, while Bruce Anderson plots with old-school chums, love blossoms in Big Lou’s Cafe. Bertie doesn’t want to go but is told that he must because Irene is his mother, and she has a right to see him. Angus compares conceptual art to the emperor’s new clothes, there is a marriage proposal, Highland Games are organised for the Drummond Street Gardens and, as always, Angus bestows a poem on the gathered company.

I never want to say too much for fear of giving away any spoilers, but suffice it to say that everything I've ever wanted to have happen for some of my most-loved and most-despised characters happened in this book.

Meanwhile, further up in the New Town, Bruce Anderson's property development plans are thwarted by a sudden crisis of conscience that leads to a shocking revelation. Sister Maria-Flore dei Flori de Montagna, the social-climbing nun, plays a more prominent role by dispensing her type of advice and wisdom to Bertie's father, Angus and Bruce. because it is possible to change the world, if one is determined enough, and if one sees with sufficient clarity just what has to be changed.Things work out nicely not at all like I'd expected it to and it'll be interesting to see how these new storylines play out in the next book. This one takes us back to 44 Scotland Street and various well-loved characters as well as some new ones. Bertie is also enrolled in an Aberdeen school, where he can't understand the Scots language used by his classmates. There little point in giving a plot synopsis because I’m not sure there is a plot, nothing in particular happens.
