Whatever else he did, or is yet to do, he can always play the ultimate get-out-of-jail card: he’s the guy who made Nebraska.

But I’ll tell you this, the experience made me consider at some length the first question I planned to ask during my Nebraska interview, on my second visit to Colts Neck. It is probably difficult for many Springsteen fans like me to engage with this person properly without it degenerating into unthinking and stupid hero worship. If Burke definitively proves one point over the course of the book, it’s that “Nebraska,” like the works of John Steinbeck, Flannery O’Connor, Martin Scorsese, Woody Guthrie, etc. The previous year I had discovered Springsteen's music through 'The River' but 'Nebraska' was totally different an album out of the blue and without the E-Street band. Even if Nebraska isn't a favourite I would recommend you read this moving account of how this sombre jewel of an album came, miraculously, into being.

He also interviewed more than a dozen celebrated artists and musical insiders, from Rosanne Cash to Steven Van Zandt, about their reactions to the album.

The story behind the music, behind this particular album which was such a departure from what came before.Probably yes since the author of this new Nebraska book spoke with Bruce Springsteen and that might reveal new details that are still unknown today.

The effect is the same when the pumped-up realities we encounter on social media leave people who are feeling their own unfiltered humanness at a distance, isolated. It's also interesting to hear the verdict of Peter Case - a fine folk musician Springsteen himself admires but who has not achieved the popularity his talent deserves. Sometimes the drums speed up because of a song’s emotion, sometimes a singer’s pitch drifts because that’s where the feeling takes it. He played alongside Springsteen when he was a member of the Del Fuegos, and continues to record music. He gave heavy-handed nods to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, oversinging on The Ghost of Tom Joad (1995), Devils and Dust (2005), and We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (2006). Springsteen's Nebraska is his most poignant album, and i listened to his music while I was reading this book.

As the music industry rushed to greet the digital dawn, says Zanes, Springsteen made “a cave painting in the age of photography”.My brother and I bought a copy of this for our Dad for his birthday and, as with most things Springsteen related, I couldn’t get him one without getting myself one! Much to my wife's chagrin, I'm into Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and have read and watched everything about him over the years.
