Mis-shapes' and 'Pencil Skirt' is yet more of Cocker at his most debauched, but it makes for some pretty catchy tracks, with 'Underwear' proving the same. These two major turns in fortune provided all the momentum necessary to ensure the band’s fifth album, Different Class, would be, commercially, their definitive release. Different Class has a surprisingly diverse tapestry to it, from art rock to more conventional indie numbers, and undeniable early Britpop. Every record is shipped in original factory-applied shrink wrap and has never been touched by human hands.

Common People rocketed to number two, helped by a colourful video starring Sadie Frost and moves from Cocker that would go down in the history of improvisational interpretive dance. Clever songwriting isn’t biased to any gender, and while several of his peers were content to play up their laddishness, Cocker’s peculiar disposition had him turning heads of both sexes. Similarly, Jarvis Cocker's lyrics take two themes, sex and social class, and explore a number of different avenues in bitingly clever ways. Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all - it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked, kitchen-drama pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here. Originally released in 1973, The Dark Side Of The Moon became Pink Floyd's first number one album in the USA, remaining on the chart for 741 weeks between 1973 and 1988.Bruce Springsteen's first new studio album in five years takes his music to a new place, drawing inspiration in part from the Southern California pop records of the late '60s and early '70s. The award was the cherry atop a most morish cake of a record, which over 15 years since its release continues to reward the listener with some of the smartest, slinkiest, sauciest, spectacular pop songs of a decade that was, looking back, not that brilliant once the bucket hats and ironic anoraks are whipped away. We carry a broad range of CDs and vinyl (7”/12” singles and LPs) and specialise in indie, alternative, rock, punk, metal plus a few other genres.

Pressed onto 180g vinyl, this special issue comes with an insert featuring Cocker's bitingly deft lyrics. As well as perfectly capturing the behavior of his characters, Cocker grasps the nuances of language, creating a dense portrait of suburban and working-class life. Pops and crackles all over my copy, which are accentuated because it's such a quiet pressing I have to crank the volume way up. Different Class absolutely BEGS to be pressed across 2xLPs as it is way too long to sound any good on a single LP.Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since. Thirty years of fury, frustration, sexual longing, class angst and observations about girls' skirts was rammed into the grand Brechtian/Brel-like drama of "Live Bed Show", "I Spy" and, of course, "Common People"; and sure enough it has the impact of crashing head-on into someone's entire sordid, suppressed secret life. Different Class (released in Japan as Common People) is the fifth studio album by English rock band Pulp, released on 30 October 1995 by Island Records. Though he, like his band, wasn’t new at all – how very queer by today’s make-‘em-and-break-‘em standards.

There are definitely Britpop bands I prefer - Oasis, for one - but I do think Different Class by Pulp is the genre's definitive moment. In doing so he marked the begining of the down fall of the self proclaimed King of Pop and kiddie fiddle at large. Cocker liked the double meaning, with its allusions to the British social class system, which was a theme of some of the songs on the album. On the heels of such excitement, anticipation for "Different Class" ran high, and not only does it deliver, it blows away all their previous albums, including the fine "His 'n' Hers". A million listens would not be enough to get all the humour and dirt and sex that is in "A Different Class. When Pulp released Different Class in October 1995, it was at the peak of the Britpop era – less a cultural movement and more a label the music press had slapped on a collection of disparate (though mostly white, guitar-based) British bands infiltrating the charts in the mid-90s. Number seven on NME’s best albums of 95, 11 on Mojo’s, and taking top spot on Melody Maker’s countdown, it was clear that Different Class was another critical hit.By the time Different Class was released at the end of October 1995, Pulp, particularly lead singer Jarvis Cocker, were genuine British superstars.
