About this deal

The series might take you on a rollercoaster of emotions or provide a steady companion on lazy Sunday afternoons. There may be some factual parts to this story that somehow entwines into a fictional piece of work that makes this story interesting and worth the read. However I also feel that perhaps the palace were at fault for not being clear enough in some of their later intentions when it came to Marion’s writing.

In December 2007, she went on a secret trip to Basra to broadcast behind-the-scenes footage of the troops. I loved the imagined conversations between Crawfie and nursery staff stalwarts Alah and Bobo and the way in which their relationship morphed into ones of mutual respect and fondness over the years. During the pandemic she lived with her daughters, Grace (from her first marriage) and Winnie (from her marriage to Vickery), while her older twin sons Harry and Jack have flown the nest. For someone who doesn’t consider herself a royalist and has never watched a single episode of The Crown the author did a splendid job of arousing my interest in a subject I have paid very little attention to previously. She also featured in the first two series of The Brian Conley Show and in 1994, Fern Britton went onto present the famous television cookery game show, Ready Steady Cook. Fern’s love of the Royal Family has led to her latest novel, The Good Servant, which is a historical fiction based on the then Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margret’s governess.

Sadly Crawfie was blinded by love and possibly coerced into selling her story which ruined her life. The conclusion is unavoidable that Marion Crawford -- a good, kindly, gentle, intelligent and well-intentioned woman -- was ultimately betrayed by everyone who knew her. She has also presented other programmes, like Coast to Coast People, The Television Show and Magic Moments. Even though the other employees warned her that she is just one of the staff in the royal household, she would do anything for the monarchy. It’s one of those books that once you start reading completely takes over and I found myself constantly wanting to read just a little bit more.

A wise and witty short story that is full of Christmas cheer from the best-selling author and TV presenter, Fern Britton. The timing of the book couldn’t be better as the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for Queen Elizabeth have just taken place. Obviously you have to remember Fern’s version of events is only loosely based around fact but it is a convincing piece of storytelling especially in regard to the influential nature of the aforementioned Mr Buthlay. Although you can never be sure what really happened, this story certainly made you feel for the participants and was compelling to read.

There are various times during my reading that I found myself empathetic for the heroine and all she had to go through…dealing with a despicable husband for so long and the manipulation pressed upon her by him, the Royal family, and the media. In April 2008, Fern Britton together with her colleague, Phillip Schofield was the presenter of the revived 'all star' version of the super hit ITV show, Mr and Mrs. WHILE some people just walked, chatted on Zoom and watched TV reruns during the pandemic, bestselling author and TV presenter Fern Britton was immersing herself in royal history. She has always dreamt of being a teacher, helping the children who need her most - and one day, perhaps, she hopes to fall in love and have children of her own. It’s no surprise then that her portrayal of a young naive idealistic woman whose initial ambitions in life were a far cry from the role she ends up with is an overwhelmingly sympathetic one.
