So, let's see just what the upgraded Alloy FPS RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard by our friends over at HyperX is really capable off. You do get a handful of on-the-fly options double-mapped on the Function row, including your standard media controls, game mode, and rudimentary lighting changes: rainbow, a red “breathing” setting, and a blue mode with white WASD lighting. This keyboard comes with Kailh Speed Silver switches and those only, there’s no variety (like Kailh Speed Copper or Bronze) but that’s the least of my worries, it could very well be due to mass production of one single keyboard type being cheaper than producing 2 to 4 different variants not counting different layouts and keycaps.

Ignore other guy who complaining about sensitivity, its kailh silver speed switches which requires minimal pressure to activate the keys. The second reason isn't a deal breaker, but the fact that the keyboard will vibrate and resonate when in use is something that will cause a numb feeling ion your fingertips. However, there are similar keyboards available from HyperX, like the HyperX Alloy FPS Pro, but it's TKL, only has red backlighting, no software support, and is available with Cherry MX Red or Blue switches. The plastic casing is made out of ABS plastic, as is the norm these days, and has cutouts to accommodate the various bits and bobs on the keyboard PCB.

HyperX gear is the choice of pro gamers, tech enthusiasts, and overclockers worldwide because it meets the most stringent product specifications and is built with best-in-class components. By default you get the standard rainbow wave, and you can press Fn + F1 through F3 to check out two more included defaults: red with a breathing effect or all blue with WASD and 1234 in white. It comes with a detachable wrist rest and has dedicated media keys, a volume wheel, and a USB passthrough. The FPS RGB is a fairly large full-sized keyboard that comes with full RGB backlighting, macro-programmable keys, and outstanding software support for easy customization. VA’s defense matrix and missiles with one keystroke to macro-ing my favorite spy-checking technique. No matter the layout or the switches used, there are many common features that the Alloy lineup brings to the table.

Much of what the Alloy FPS RGB offers, we have seen in some form or fashion from HyperX in the past, however, this is the first from them to support Silver Speed switches from Kailh. One of the biggest selling points of the Alloy FPS RGB is that it’s currently the only keyboard in HyperX’s line-up to offer Speed switches and one of the rare few to drop Cherry in favor of Kailh. There is a subtle chamfer along the keyboard’s edges, which looks good and is comfier to rest your fingers on than a boxier design.

Due to its compact design media controls rely on secondary functions (FN + F10/F11 for volume control, etc. We do like that the bottom of the feet have a rubber pad on them for added grip, but this can make the feet collapse if you find yourself shifting the keyboard around on the desk a lot.

Once you install and launch the NGenuity software it will check the firmware installed in your keyboard and if it includes a newer version it will ask your permission to continue with the update process (it may take up to a minute to complete).

The Origins provides a better typing experience, thanks to its well-spaced and stable keys and proprietary linear HyperX Red switches that feel light and responsive.
