There are so many of their 'full length films', as well as their many shorts, which are wonderful, it becomes impossible to say-One of Their Best', just because there are so many I can say that of. I thought this was odd, as do many people now hearing those tracks, but it was not my choice to make. The set is rounded out with a very brief interview with Oliver Hardy from 1950 and a huge collection of rare photos, stills, posters, and scripts. The Midnight Patrol features constant flicker, but is a mostly clean and stable presentation otherwise. In Way Out West, they make their way to a small town to inform a young woman of an inheritance, but run into greedy locals who want to cash in.

Sure, the plots weren’t usually particularly involved, often focusing on a bit of minutia, but they were never really the point anyway. Fresh to the Blu-ray format, Laurel and Hardy: The Definitive Restorations gathers together 21 shorts and 2 features in the best possible quality with a bevy of bonus features. Although the set contains the long-lost silent short The Battle of the Century in its near-complete form, this is the only silent short included here, and that is a bit of a disappointment. There has been quite a debate on this forum and other sites regarding the video quality of this release, with some claiming that this is the best these films have ever looked, others claiming that some look nothing like film.Beginning as a 7-year-old in the early eighties (shut the fuck up, boomer – I still look younger than you), I’ve consistently had a bit of a personal connection with Laurel and Hardy. At the beginning of 2019, my dad had an accident and ended up in hospice with a pretty grim diagnosis for his future. Over the years with these, we’ve perhaps become immune and learned to overlook jumps, splices, cuts, scratches, crackly soundtracks etc etc. The Music Box features crushed blacks, a bit of flicker, and mild speckling, but is otherwise clean and clear. Other times, Laurel and Hardy mine humor from their attempts to be helpful, but find that the more good they try to do, the more chaotic a situation becomes.
