About this deal

Compact cultivars, such as B. sempervirens ‘Suffruticosa’ and B. microphylla, can be planted 10–15cm (4–6in) apart. Buxus is vulnerable to box blight, nutrient deficiency and bugs, however Buxus Feed contains vital plant foods and trace elements required for good establishment and strong heathy growth of Buxus.

Common box ( Buxus sempervirens) is the most widely available species and has rich green foliage. You may find a few other species or cultivars in specialist nurseries, with smaller or larger leaves, coloured or variegated foliage, compact, upright or spreading growth habits. Afterplant Evergreen Bio-Active Fertiliser - Afterplant Evergreen Bio-Active Fertiliser is ideal for application as an aftercare product for evergreen shrubs. This plant fertiliser complements the use of Rootgrow as a planting aid. Afterplant is the perfect companion to evergreen plants, both ground and container grown. If growth is poor, you can feed with an organic fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone in spring – however, this is often unnecessary and organic mulch will be sufficient to keep plants healthy and well-fed, provided your box is growing in reasonably healthy soil. Feeding Box Grown In Containers Mulch also helps conserve soil moisture in dry conditions and can suppress weed growth to a degree.

Box is very easy to propagate by cuttings taken in early to mid-summer, when the new growth is beginning to become firm. See our guide to taking semi-ripe cuttings. Other gardens renowned for their topiary include Levens Hall (Cumbria), Great Dixter (East Sussex) and Hidcote Manor (Gloucestershire), while you’ll find spectacular parterres in gardens such as Pitmedden (Scotland) and Ham House (Surrey). This breaks down to provide organic matter, conserves soil moisture and prevents the spread of fungal spores from water splash.”

Excessive sunlight can result in sun-scorched leaves but plants will recover from this. Some bronzing of the foliage may occur in the Autumn. Initial symptoms are the delayed emergence of new growth. Patches of wilted and discoloured leaves increase in size before falling from the plant. Spores masses that often appear underneath the leaves in wet or humid conditions are pink rather than white for box blight. TreatmentEarly diagnosis and plant care are key to controlling Volutella blight. Unlike box blight full plant recovery can be expected if cultural conditions are improved. This includes the removal of diseased branches when foliage is dry and old leaves from the interior of infected plants. Destroy the debris and wipe clean cutting tools with a suitable disinfectant to prevent the spread of further disease. An application of Top Buxus, high in nitrogen for strong growth and sulphur a natural fungicidal agent to defend against blight will benefit the plant. Control & Prevention
