Though the traditional roofers felt is not often used these days as a more rigid protection system, an eaves tray is usually specified in conjunction with a replacement upvc roofline system instead of timber fascia and soffit boards. What I can tell you, is the bottom edge of ribbed tile extends 1/3 over the gutter, and is standing on a flat tile the same length. Eaves are found at the edges of a roof, where they extend beyond the wall of a building. In their simplest form, such as on a garden shed, that may be all there is to say about the eaves. But in most buildings, eaves are an important part of the complete roof systemand they fulfil several roles, including:

Guttering – Gutting collects rainwater from the roof and carries it away efficiently, preventing water from collecting on the roof or running down the sides of the building. It is usually fixed to the fascia. Eaves protectors must be installed with the felt running over the top of them. I would recommend the eaves protector is combined with a ventilation tray, unless you already have a well ventilated roof - most roofs are not well ventilated. Ideally ridge venting or tile vents would also be installed.

Supporting the guttering – Gutters run along the bottom of the eaves, gathering rainwater or melted snow, and guiding it away from the structure. Contributing to the building’s aesthetic – The eaves play a significant part in the roof’s overall look, giving the building an attractive, finished appearance. All felt should dress down into the guttering, so any rain that gets past the tiles runs down the top of the felt and drains into the guttering away from the building. Shading – Sometimes, eaves may extend out from the rooftop far enough to provide a degree of shade, possibly reducing solar gains or glare inside the building.

Boxed-in eaves – These are similar to the exposed eaves, but the rafters have a cover that follows the roof pitch. Ventilation – Eaves ventsallow fresh air into the roof void, preventing condensation. Options include soffit vents, as well as ventilation trays that run continuously along the bottom edge of the roofline. Also know as the Felt Support Tray, this product is now widely used by roofing contractors along with replacement UPVC fascia installers at eaves level (as detailed in the image below). Drawn to colder roof spaces by convection, condensed water vapour can lead to rotting timbers, rusted metal fixtures and felt damage from mould growth.Soffits – As described above, the soffit runs horizontally under the eaves. Soffits are often made from timber or PVC. Replacing the eaves felt is not normally a job done on its own, usually you would only notice the eaves felt when carrying out other jobs such as replacing fascia boards or roof tiles.
