Description

Boisterous or busy toddler on your hands? Kids aged 3+ won’t argue over the Camelbak Eddy (we can hope…) thanks to the fun, adventurous designs. They’re made for flip, bite and sip use with a straw, a button-press lid and a valve that delivers a steady flow. Important for active toddlers, they’re supposedly leak proof when closed and spill-proof when open, and our Mumsnetter’s review supports that. I have bought numerous sippy cups for my son to start weaning and found that all of them used to leak, or he started to choke on the water as it came out so fast. Another issue was that he couldn’t grip the cup easily, but since using this product, all of these problems have been solved! Happy baby, happy mum. It may take a while for your baby or toddler to get used to it, whether they have been feeding on the breast or bottle, but when it comes to how to transition your baby to a sippy cup, practice and perseverance are what's key. You may find it easier to go from a bottle to a cup as your child will have grown used to holding the bottle.

The classic cup has been a favourite with parents for years and it can be found in most supermarkets. There are cheaper cups, but we think it’s excellent value for money as a solid, well-made model from a trusted premium brand. With a low-ish price tag, you can buy a few (one for at Grandma’s, one for under the pushchair…) without breaking the bank. Go slowly: it's a strange sensation to go from breast or bottle to a sippy cup, so naturally, it will take time and practice before your child is confident. Go slowly and help them get used to the cup, and with time it'll become a natural technique eventually. If I could change one thing about this product, I would make it a little cheaper and change the handle to make it a little bigger for baby to grip. Otherwise it’s great! Tested by mum Georgina Leggett for the Mother & Baby awards 2018: The Tum Tum weighted sippy cup is really good. DD is one year old and can drink from it great. She usually drinks two cups of water a day whereas before she was barely drinking any’ - tried and tested by Mumsnet user, TeacakeTotty. Our Verdict Transitioning from a bottle or breast to a sippy cup can be a challenge. If you've already tried it, you'll know from first-hand experience how often plastic cups without a lid aren't the best when it comes to baby weaning products and are likely to go flying and soak everything and everyone in the immediate vicinity. That's why many parents choose to give their children a sippy cup to bridge the gap.

Pharmacy product

We have lots of Klean Kanteens here. They can be pricey, but have really lasted and certainly do the job. Love the wide openings for ice cubes etc.” - recommended by Mumsnet user, IndecentFeminist Our Verdict

I would recommend this bottle as I loved the colourful design and the shape of the bottle. It easily fits in changing bags and doesn’t leak, provided the lid is fitted correctly. It holds a large amount of liquid which is great if out for the day! The product is very easy to clean and easy to store while at home. Choose a familiar drink: to start introducing a sippy cup to your baby or toddler, use only milk or water. They are familiar liquids and are the best ones for your little one's teeth and health. It can feel quite overwhelming to introduce a new way of drinking to your baby, especially at a time when you're also contending with the mess weaning brings along. Here's some advice from baby experts the NCT: I would like there to be more colour options for the beaker as I have three children who fight over whose is whose. Maybe the beaker could have a bigger handle as my son had trouble getting his fingers through the handles. Tested by mum Samantha Kirby for the Mother & Baby awards 2018:

How we choose our recommendations

Trying to reduce your plastics? You’ll love Klean Kanteen’s stainless steel water bottles for kids as it’s a bottle for life, which reduces wastage. The Classic Sippy comes with a spill-proof sippy cap and dust cover for little ones, but it’s also compatible with Klean Kanteen's bamboo, sports and loop mouth pieces so it can grow with your child. The bottle itself is virtually bomb-proof - it doesn’t scratch or dent, so it'll survive as time goes by. Just don’t lose it (eek!).

There are various different things you may want to consider when considering buying a sippy cup, with different benefits to your child. Here's what to look for: I don’t think I would choose this product over all others on the market, as my son finds the teat quite big for his mouth. We also found the top very fidgety when screwing it on. On the plus side, as the bottle is quite tall, it fits in the highchair drinks holder easily, as the handles don't get in the way. Another plus is the amount of liquid the bottle holds, which comes in useful especially in hot weather. Other features of sippy cups include the handles, which are sometimes removable, 360-designed lids which mean they can be sipped from any angle and your child's sippy cup should always be BPA-free to avoid toxins. You may also be able to find the perfect sippy cup as part of your baby's weaning set so everything matches and is familiar to baby. Variety is key: swap your sippy cup out for a normal cup too, to grow your little one's experiences with both types of cup. This will make the transition to a free-flow cup easier. With its soft, silicone, free-flow spout, this cup from NUK is a great choice for breastfed babies as it mimics the shape and feel of a breast while teaching them to sip from a cup. It’s a great place to start for your baby to develop more strength and coordination before moving onto an open cup or similar. Our product recommendations are based on a combination of real-world testing from our burgeoning army of mum testers and the extensive knowledge of our experienced editorial team and product specialists. Where we can, we also consult experts who specialise in that field to ensure you get the right advice along with the right product, and we listen to what you say as well. Our thriving mum community on our Facebook group #mumtribe also often hold great insights as to which products mums really like best and why, helping us highlight the products that meet what you really want. The NHS recommends sterilising all feeding equipment every time you use it for at least the first 12 months of your baby's life. How Mother&Baby selected the best sippy cups Get a Doidy Cup! They're brilliant, good size for little hands and angled so they can see the water coming at them. My toddler had one from 6 months and she much preferred it to a sippy cup. Takes a little while (and a lot of spills) to get used to but definitely worth it’ - highly recommended by Mumsnet user, HereComesFrog. Our Verdict Separate every part cup, making sure any straws and detachable mouthpieces are separated from the main cup too.
