Description

I liked the way that the author has fingered a relevant topic with expertise, compiled and created numerous techniques which he shares and that throw light on different ways of studying.

Topper replies: "I didn't know they were sad. Perhaps they've looked too long on desk tops and plumbing and legs of lamb. Perhaps they've looked on loveliness too late." It is of a marvellousness in full truth, but – hein! It is also an affair of the most lamentable nature, for is it not that there go an illimitable number of francs that should be rightfully ours?” His books are most concisely described as escapist fantasy, and yet there's a peculiarly distinctive quality to the writing, and in places an engaging wistfulness, that raises them out of the ordinary. Expect nothing of the plot: it's merely an excuse for high jinks and bizarre observations. The characters, living as Smith did in the Prohibition era, display an insatiable thirst for alcohol and a distinctly casual attitude towards theft. The author clearly would have liked them to have sex whenever not incapacitated by alcohol, but writing in the 1920s he didn't dare go beyond a few kisses, so they seem incredibly chaste by modern standards. From my younger days as a much older person in a younger person’s body I had some familiarity with the old Topper movies though if the reading of this book is any judge of such things my concept of what the movies were actually ABOUT might be more than a tad askew of reality.

Skin and Bones, Turnabout, The Night Life of the Gods, The Passionate Witch, The Stray Lamb, The Bishop's Jaegers, The Glorious Pool, and Rain in the Doorway were all published by Armed Services Editions. There are various study techniques and habits that a lot of JEE/NEET aspirants follow. These tips are compiled after a lot of interviews and research with them. Every parent play the most pivotal mole in, their children's development. So, must for every pevrent / teacher. The Passionate Witch (1941, published posthumously and completed by Norman H. Matson). Produced in 1942 as the film I Married a Witch, this novel was one of the inspirations, along with Bell, Book and Candle, for the long-running TV series Bewitched. A sequel to the novel, Bats in the Belfry (1942), is entirely by Matson, though sometimes attributed to Smith.

I chose something different for Halloween this year, a classic ghost story. I've seen the movies that came from this book series and a couple of the TV shows. The Topper Book was a comic book published from 1954 to 1994, to tie in with the children's comic The Topper. The first twelve editions were undated, and later books were published with the date of the following year on the cover, since they were traditionally published in the autumn and in time for Christmas.

As for the ghosts that haunt Cosmo Topper – now that is a rare reason to appreciate the hero, for Cosmo sounds great and it was also used for Cosmo Kramer – they seem to belong to the same category of bizarre, outré, outlandish personages and not ones that would provoke laughter, say as in another glorious masterpiece, A Good Man in Africa by the master of the genre, William Boyd http://realini.blogspot.com/2018/09/a... Topper is complacent, routine, and a bit of a milquetoast man. He's a banker and kowtows to just about everyone. His wife runs all over him and even tells him what his favorite food is. I love the movie (especially the first one) and the concept is a good one. As for the claim at the start of the book how all friendly ghost books come from this, the Canterville Ghost predates this by a few decades. But if there was ever anyone willing to love a 20s comedy, I would have thought to be first in line. Though I didn't like this book--it has the zaniness of Benchley and Wodehouse and the sly wit of Parker and Coward but I found it appalling in many places. Far more alcohol is consumed in this book than anything in The Hangover or recent bro films. The concept is a good one--middle-aged man in a crisis, buys an inappropriate car to his wife's dismay, and discovers that the car he bought, restored after a fatal DUI accident, comes with two inebriated, mischievous ghosts.Joseph Blotner collection on Thorne Smith, Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts, University of Pennsylvania
