Description

Officers Taylor and Landsiedel are two of the four Maui Police officers assigned to the MINT unit, an acronym for the Morgue Identification Notification Task force. Through interviews with family and everything, we found out that he would frequent libraries and find pleasure in reading books or hanging out there,” Landsiedel added. Celebrated for high concepts and an ability to recontextualize years of complex superhero continuity, Ewing’s imagination is unbound here. H is script deftly establishes the rules of his sci-fi society, illustrating how the human race relies on the dwindling corpses of dead space gods to keep running. These ideas of scarcity and scavenging are ones Ewing has turned to in past work, with the dread of the climate crisis a running element in Immortal Hulk. The skirmishes over dwindling resources and their illicit trade speak to a present-day dread taken to an extreme. However, Ewing keeps the engaging mystery of what lies beyond the limited human understanding of the universe thematically front and center. Officials within the 17 local, state and federal agencies responding to the Lahaina wildfire were once confronted with a missing list exceeding 3,000 people during the earliest days of the disaster. We Only Find Them When They're Dead by Al Ewing and Simone Di Meo has been through a couple of arcs at Boom Studios. Book One told the story ofCaptain Malik and the crew of the spaceship the Vihaan II, in search of the only resources that matter – and can only be found by harvesting the giant corpses of alien gods that are found on the edge of human space. While other autopsy ships and explorers race to salvage the meat, minerals, and metals that sustain the human race, Malik sees an opportunity to finally break free from this system: by being the first to find a living god. But Malik's obsession with the gods will push his crew into the darkest reaches of space, bringing them face to face with a threat unlike anything they ever imagined, unless the rogue agent on their trail can stop them first. We Only Find Them When They're Dead is written by Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk, Ultimates) and illustrated by Simone Di Meo (Power Rangers). I've never actually reviewed an Al Ewing book but I know his work has been well-received, especially on immortal Hulk. Simone, on the other hand, is one of my favorite artists working today and on the strength of that, I decided to give the title a shot. During a missing persons investigation in August, Taylor read a name on a report detailing newly discovered Lahaina human remains. The name belonged to one of Taylor’s former co-workers. Taylor’s fellow officer in the unit, Steven Landsiedel, described a deep personal connection to the stories of those still missing, as well as the cases he and his colleagues have closed.Yet the burden of uncovering what has happened to Lahaina’s last four missing people weighs heavily on the Maui police officers tasked with finding them.

The unthinkable, authorities said, would be for no trace of the Lahaina fire’s final missing people to ever be found. If no remains are recovered, Hawaii state law declares a person “who is absent for a continuous period of five years, during which the individual has not been heard from, and whose absence is not satisfactorily explained after diligent search or inquiry, is presumed to be dead.” Maui’s 150-year-old banyan tree is growing leaves after being charred by the wildfires. It’s just the beginning of a long recovery In an interview with Taylor and Landsiedel, both conveyed significant training connected to notifying grieving families after fatal vehicle crashes. We have ideas of who we think it is, but our profession in forensics is not to go on ideas or hunches, it’s to go on the science,” Earles said. Taylor described how he personally notified the family members of more than 20 Lahaina wildfire victims, just over one in five of the dead. The notifications were face-to-face, with the assistance of the Honolulu Police Department, and chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team.

For Landsiedel, his connection to the deadliest wildfire in California history spurred a greater sense of compassion and responsibility for those affected by the wildfire in Lahaina. You’re there with the person as they’re sobbing, and you see firsthand the trauma,” said Brad Taylor, the first officer assigned to Maui Police’s unit for Lahaina fire missing persons and notifications to victims’ families. Details concerning the three remaining people on the Lahaina fire credible missing list have not been previously reported.

The fifth person recently removed from the list is Artur Babkov, 35. Maui police confirmed to CNN Babkov was found in good health in late October. The title follows a group of miners that have the grisly task of mining corpses so enormous in scope and scale that they are believed to be the bodies of gods. The title of the book comes from the fact that no one has ever seen any of these beings while they are alive. This leads the crew and the reader to ask the obvious question of what forces are out there powerful enough to kill these beings?

Elmer Lee Stevens was also described by the Maui officers as a common presence in Lahaina. Stevens is a father of two, a man who, they said, finds solace in the quiet pleasures of life. Honolulu Civil Beat, a nonprofit newsroom, reported eight of Coloma’s family members died in the wildfire – an astounding toll for an extended Filipino family. He’s a local artist, a boat builder, a woodworker, and he’s a published author and also a father of two,” Landsiedel said. Two of the officers, who have not previously spoken publicly about their work, described fragments of interrupted lives, as well as a steadiness of purpose to continue their efforts.
