It's also very easy to use, which makes it perfect for beginners for making greek yogurt. Plus, the dessert produces is delicious and nutritious. Saving money doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice performance, and the Euro Cuisine YM80 Electric Yogurt Maker proves that. Like the more expensive Euro Cuisine model, this electric yogurt machine comes with seven 6-ounce glass containers that all fit together in the round base to make up to 42 ounces of yogurt in one cook cycle. The controls are extremely basic: There's just an on/off switch with an indicator that the machine is on. The "timer" includes numbers one through 12 printed on the side, with a manual indicator you point to the hour when your yogurt will be done. (Depending on the base ingredients, a batch can take anywhere from six to 12 hours to ferment.) I find straining yogurt to be a great cost-effective technique. Buy a large tub of plain yogurt and you’ve got several tasty possibilities! The process is super easy, and you probably already have the tools to do it in your kitchen. This blog will walk you through the process. Let’s be very honest with each other for a moment – store-bought plain yogurt is awful and I’m sorry you had to go through that terrible experience. Homemade plain yogurt is pleasantly sweet with a mild, tart finish. There’s always a way to be more eco-friendly but you don’t need to give yourself mental anxiety if it’s not right for you.

Fit a strainer over a glass bowl or measuring cup (large enough to hold the amount of yogurt you plan on straining). When buying a yogurt maker, it's essential that it can be used for more than one thing. Yogurt makers are typically multi-functional, but some have more functions than others.

Why you need a yogurt strainer

Yogurt is considered one of the healthiest foods around. It's rich in probiotics which aid digestion, reduce the risk of intestinal infection and colon cancer, and improve lactose tolerance and cholesterol profile--lowers LDL, raises HDL( source). Both strained and unstrained yogurt is very good for you, but there are some nutritional differences. When the liquid whey is strained from regular yogurt, the volume of the yogurt reduces by half. (This is why you can expect Greek yogurt to costs twice as much as regular yogurt.) That means it's more concentrated and results in some nutritional changes.( Source) To make a delicious cream cheese substitute – simply strain the yogurt for 24-48 hours, stirring several times throughout. You may want to look for one that comes with a stand but doesn't need too much space on your countertop. Some machines come with an extra container or bag that can be used as storage when it's not being used. Washable: Calcium - Both yogurts are considered a good source of calcium, but regular yogurt has 3 times more calcium than Greek yogurt, because the liquid that is strained out of Greek yogurt is high in calcium. But you don’t have to go gung ho like I did – you can simply learn how to strain yogurt (and collect whey) and carry on with your life. OR, you can join me, and start fermenting and culturing everything you set your eyes on. Up to you! Why would you want to strain yogurt?

Thank you for writing, Doreen. You are a genius! You changed my yogurt-making process for the better. I use commercial coffee filters to drain large quantities of yogurt. I bought a box of 3 gal. filter papers and cut them (fold into wedge, measure ‘point’ from center to rim of whatever strainer/colendar you’re using and cut accordingly). You can get them in smaller sizes, too, but I liked the flexibility of the larger size and they cost pretty much the same. If you are looking for a more convenient way to strain your homemade Greek yogurt, this kit from Kleynhuis is the perfect solution. It can strain a full gallon of curd or other foodstuffs. Once you have decided whether you’re using a basic strainer lined with cheesecloth method, OR the pro yogurt strainer method, it’s pretty simple from here on out.

Lower-priced yogurt strainers may not be the best option since they would only last for a few months and you would have to buy another one. You should opt for a high-quality machine if you want it to last longer and be used multiple times. Removing the yogurt from the cheesecloth was very difficult and it seemed like a lot of the yogurt itself was still on the cloth – all that yogurt in the cloth and lots of wasted yogurt down the drain – and you know I much I vouch for reducing food waste. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used to make plastics that are found in containers that store food and beverages. There have been links between BPA exposure and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, insulin resistance, and liver toxicity. Reusable:

You know that fine mesh strainer that you use to sift your flour? It can be used as a yogurt strainer as well. A word of warning: Manually squeezing the yogurt pouch will result in a slightly cloudy whey. I can live with it. 8. You can speed up the straining process with manual manipulation.
