All brasses are alloys of zinc and copper and CZ121 is an alpha/beta alloy containing 37-45% zinc. To improve its machinability it also has a 3% lead content. This lead remains insoluble in the microstructure of the brass and these soft particles act as both a lubricant and as chip breakers. You are then welcome to take advantage of our ever popular Free Cutting Service, which will allow you to request that your selected length is supplied cut down to the exact length required for your application. You can read more about our Cutting Service here. Brass flat bars are often used widely for decorative purposes. The applications for brass flat bars include decorative trims, rails, handles, valves, bearings and fixings. As a metal, it has excellent corrosion resistance characteristics. This makes it highly valued in settings such as marine applications.

Since brass is a copper alloy, it exhibits various properties that are characteristic of copper. Despite this, brass does have some unique properties that set it apart from pure copper and other copper alloys. These include the following: The cold working properties of brass is poor, but hot working and machinability are classed as excellent. Because of its resistance to corrosion and anti-bacterial qualities, it is used widely in applications that are exposed to water and moisture, such as bathroom pipes and fittings. Can you weld brass? It has excellent tensile strength, which is one of the reasons why Brass is so often used in the manufacture of fasteners & fixings.

All of our Brass Bars are supplied in Grade CZ121 aka CW614N. This is the free machining grade of brass. Its excellent machinability is achieved by the addition of approximately 3% lead into the materials composition. The lead aids lubrication and also acts as a chip breaker. An extensive range of applications Choice Metals should be your first place to look for high quality metals. Brass is the most popular of the ‘yellow metals’ and is almost entirely made up of Copper mixed with various amounts of Zinc. For this reason, Brass is often referred to as a Copper Alloy. Brass flat bar is usually supplied in grade CZ12; this free machining alloy has 3% lead content dispersed throughout the strip to aid lubrication during machining. It has a high melting point of roughly 900°C; however, the exact melting point differs depending on the concentration of the various metals in the alloy. Once you have chosen your desired bar or section size, you can then select one of the dozens of length options that we offer. These begin at just 15mm long on some of the larger sizes, and go all of the way up, in small & handy increments, to 3 metres long. The alloys used to create brass products combine high machinability with considerable strength after forming. By adding zinc, brass flat bars have enhanced strength that makes them suitable for an extensive number of applications. All brasses are ductile and the lower the zinc content, the more ductile they are.
