In recent years we have overseen a range of exciting flavours be introduced to our brand – including Chilli Charger Mayo, Burger Sauce and Coronation Mayo. Our portfolio is the perfect source for driving our purpose to ‘Make Taste Not Waste’. The make-up of the panel broadly represents the demographic profile of adults in the UK. Each brand of mayonnaise was assessed by 73 people.

Unctuous, devoid of strange additives, and endlessly adaptable – stir in 1tbsp olive oil and a crushed clove of garlic for extra flavour. So transform a plain sandwich into a delight worthy of a New York Deli, by smearing some Hellmann’s Mayonnaise onto two slices of bread and loading up with your favourite fillings. The panellists rated the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each brand of mayonnaise and told us what they liked and disliked about each one.Salt levels are medium to high, while protein, fibre and sugar are all low. All-in-all, mayonnaise is a condiment to be enjoyed in moderation. What about light mayo? A tablespoon of mayo will add around 100 calories to your meal, as it's largely composed of oil and egg. The full-fat mayo we tested consisted of 75% rapeseed oil and 10% egg on average. By the late 1980s the brand was well-established and advertised as 'the only mayonnaise', claiming over half of the market. In a time of greater health awareness, people also responded well to the introduction of the Light variety with less fat and fewer calories, so much so that an Extra Light, containing 5% fat – was added to the range. The mayonnaise was assessed in May 2023 by a large panel of consumers who regularly buy and consume mayonnaise. Both vegan and standard mayo share other ingredients including lemon juice, vinegar, salt, plus some mustard or paprika to pep it up. In 1961 Hellmann's mayonnaise arrived in the UK. Mayonnaise was a relatively new concept in Britain, so the early years were spent educating people and promoting the product as a side-of-plate condiment. It turns out that in the UK, there are no rules: in fact manufacturers can leave out egg altogether. According to the UK Food Standards Agency, “Mayonnaise doesn’t absolutely have to have eggs in by law, but it is expected, so an indication of the substituting ingredient must be given.” So all those vegan mayonnaises ought to be making clear what they use instead of egg. The brands I looked at certainly weren’t putting that information on the front of the label. When we tested vegan mayo in 2022, several supermarket brands, including Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, were rated highly by our tasting panel. Hellmann’s vegan mayo also went down well, but if you're looking to save on vegan mayo, it's worth giving own brands a try.

Over 100 years ago Richard Hellmann created Hellmann's in a deli in New York. He marked his best products by tying a blue ribbon around them. This blue ribbon is still found on the label and signifies our ongoing commitment to great quality products. Today Hellmann's mayonnaise continues to be made using quality ingredients like free range eggs, oil and vinegar. Hellmann's mayonnaise range include the classic Real, Light and Lighter than Light products available in multiple sized jars and convenient squeezy bottles to add a dollop of inspiration to household of all sizes. This year Hellmann's has also launched a new, premium range of ten BBQ and Hot Sauces introducing consumers to a global palate of ingredients and flavours sourced from around the world including Smokey American, Spicy Brazilian, and Mexican Chipotle, and spicing up barbecues across the UK.Much of a mayo’s flavour comes from eggs, lemon juice, vinegar and seasoning, which light mayo also contains. If the texture is ok, then you shouldn't notice a huge difference with a lighter mayo, especially if eaten as part of a sandwich. These weightings are based on how consumers rank the importance of different attributes of mayonnaise. Recycling your mayo bottles
