When Ice Cube released The Predator on November 17, 1992, he certainly had a lot to talk and be angry about at that moment. Death Certificate was the quintessential “angry” hip-hop album, and The Predator is bursting with resentment. Cube raps a lot about the Rodney King beating, the verdict, the riots, and the continued abuse by the police in the months that followed. Ice Cube clearly states, “I told you it would happen and you heard it, read it” on the album, about as clear of an “I told you so” as you can get. But there’s also a different sort of anger present. Throughout the album, Cube focuses much of his vitriol at people who, after the release of Death Certificate, spent more time being critical of him than listening closely to what the album had to say. Cube appointed Yo-Yo, a female rapper and guest on the album, to be the head of his record label, and helped produce her debut album, Make Way for the Motherlode. The Predator is a defining hip-hop document of the Los Angeles riots. In late April of 1992, sections of the city’s South Central neighborhood erupted in anger after a jury acquitted four police officers caught on video camera beating Rodney King. As part of hip-hop’s response to the injustice, Ice Cube sculpted his third solo album into front-line reportage. Released in November, Cube’s reactionary politics captured an incendiary historical moment. In an era before instant opinions cast out via social media apps, the album’s relative warp speed response imbued the music with a visceral power. Ice Cube's Are We There Yet? series premiered on TBS on June 2, 2010. It revolves around a family adjusting to the matriarch's new husband, played by Terry Crews. On August 16, the show was renewed for 90 more episodes, [72] amounting to six seasons. Cube also credits Tyler Perry for his entrée to TBS. [73] In front of the television cameras, rather, Cube appeared with Elmo as a 2014 guest on the PBS children's show Sesame Street. [74] Personal lifeIn a 2014 interview with rapper and producer Q-Tip, actor Leonardo DiCaprio expresses his admiration for The Predator. He stated that the album was the " magnum opus of Ice Cube's solo career" and it was a "voice for the angry and unheard during the 90s". On May 11, 2010, ESPN aired Cube's directed documentary Straight Outta L.A., examining the interplay of Los Angeles sociopolitics, hip hop, and the Raiders during the 1980s into the 1990s. [70] [71] Serial television Upon the success of the song " Boyz-n-the-Hood"—written by Cube, produced by Dre, and rapped by Eazy-E, helping establish gangsta rap in California—Eazy focused on developing N.W.A, [34] which soon gained MC Ren. Cube wrote some of Dre's and nearly all of Eazy's lyrics on N.W.A's official debut album, Straight Outta Compton, released in August 1988. [1] Yet by late 1989, Cube questioned his compensation and N.W.A's management by Jerry Heller. [35] Coleman, Brian (October 13, 2014). "The Making of Ice Cube's "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" ".
