I'd take the album as is, with a glorious Surround Mix quite happily. Of course, having learned Anderson himself is okay with the drums being changed, means any debate about original intent is mute. I've loved this album since release, and while the drums are obviously electronic, it's the only way I've ever known it. As I've stated before, I think the writing is brilliant on this record. In 1971, I wrote and recorded the song “Locomotive Breath” for the Aqualung album. The lyrical subject matter was the topic of runaway population growth.
