In one way it’s brilliant – with this one book, you’ll have all the rules to play out any scenario you can think of, no matter whether it includes vehicles, mounts or even rooftop chases. The book will also help you develop a strong sense of the fictional world of Mega-City One. However, the downside is that if you’re not already familiar with the game, or at least with other tabletop skirmish games, the learning curve will be very steep. Whilst an individual Fattie might seem a less than threatening figure, the first food raids saw massed wedges of obese activists trundling forward supported by their BeliWheels®. With their layers of flab providing a natural armour against anything but the most lethal weapons, little could stop them once momentum was gained. Lawgiver: The standard sidearm of the Mega-City Judge, the Lawgiver can fire a variety of different rounds. These range from: A warrior almost on par with Sláine himself, Niamh is a match for most opponents. With a Shoot, Fight and Resist of 4, she is on par with some of the hardiest characters in the game. Her Move of 6 makes her, like Sláine and the other warriors of the Red Branch, one of the fastest on the table. A resilient fighter, her Hardy skill means that, although unable to perform any double actions other than Charge or Recover, she incurs no penalties to her stats when first issued with an Injury marker. Furthermore, Champion of the Goddess allows her to draw two Feat cards at the beginning of every game.

During a mission on Mars to rescue an erstwhile ally and recruit him to their ranks, the various members of the team reminisce about their experiences of the Volgan War, a fictional invasion of a fascistic Russia (but with an obvious Soviet aesthetic) started by the United States under the pretence of liberation but with the actual purpose of securing dwindling oil reserves, leading to the war’s unofficial designation as the Fourth Oil War. To limit human casualties, War droids were introduced on Russian and European battlefields, to which, inevitably, the Volgans countered with more and more robots of their own, led by the tyrannical Volkhan, Ikon of Ikons – blessed with a high rank, autonomy, and a horde of powerful robots. The Volgans were eventually defeated, but at great cost and with many an ethical quandary on the road to eventual victory. To the average Mega-City One inhabitant, the most obvious symbol of the power and authority of the Justice Department is the Street Judge. These formidable individuals are responsible for the strict enforcement of the law on the dangerous streets of the ‘Big Meg’, where they act as judge, jury and executioner. In the world of Judge Dredd, the metropolis known as Mega-City One stretches down the entire eastern seaboard of the US. It’s a space of ruin, street gangs and police enforcement officers known as Judges. In the Judge Dredd Miniatures Game, this same city stretches across the length and breadth of your tabletop. In this space, players can stage face-offs between the opposing forces of crime and law. These running battles are only limited in scope by the players’ imagination, the space you have available and the models you have to hand to represent them. It’s designed for 2 or more players, with 2-4 being the recommended player count (I only played 2-player games during the review process). Hitting The Streets

Lawmaster: The standard mode of transport for Judges, the Lawmaster is an armoured motorbike fitted with bullet-proof tyres, a variety of weapons and a computer. This computer can control the Lawmaster autonomously, enabling the rider to dismount and leave the Lawmaster to act alone. Stun Pulse:the Mk2 Lawgiver also allows Judges to use a stun setting; this is particularly useful for taking perps alive. In the game, these incapacitate a target model with Stun markers.

Lawrod Mk5:derived from the venerable MK1 Lawgiver, this long-barrelled rifle sacrifices the exotic rounds and versatility of the Mk2 pistol for greater accuracy. In game this rifle can fire up to 36” without sacrificing accuracy; perfect for plugging perps or shooting Sovs at range! All of the combat events are resolved using the game’s custom dice. D6s with custom faces indicating hits and shields, with one ‘special’ face. The set also includes two standard D6s for use in some situations. Build Quality The ‘I Am The Law’ Starter Set is designed as a way into the world of this game. The world of Judge Dredd more generally. It includes everything you need to get playing. From a rulebook to a small number of miniatures, combat dice, the relevant tokens and markers, a selection of cards detailing special actions and armoury, and various pieces of street furniture. The set also includes a large, two-sided play mat, but I’ll say more about that later. Additionally, it includes a booklet containing three starter set specific scenarios that can be linked together to form a mini-campaign. This is with one player taking on the role of an increasing number of gang members, the other controlling two Street Judges. These missions are a way to gain a basic understanding of the game’s mechanics. They certainly whet the appetite for more action. However, they’re not without their complications. The Rule Of Law Some may be surprised at the limited number of minis actually provided in the set - especially when compared to the complex setups shown in the rulebook. It is, almost inevitably, impossible to recreate the kind of battles pictured with what’s provided here. Warlord Games have given the player just enough to be getting on with. However, if you really want to recreate the world of the comics then you’re going to want to invest in many additional models, buildings and props. Body Armour: Judges wear toughened bodysuits, a variety of armoured pads and, of course, a helmet. This body armour is lightweight and durable enough to provide your tabletop Judges with heightened Resists stats, but not at the expense of their Evade. Whilst Judges are highly trained and well-equipped, they both inhabit and protect a dangerous world. Demonic, undead and/or alien invasions are real possibilities, as are apocalyptic wars. Temporal and interdimensional travel exposes the world to threats from across time and alternative realities. Even domestic robots have a penchant for bloody revolt! Having invested so many years and resources in the training of their new Judges, the Justice Department is keen to maximise the Judges’ chances of survival. For this reason, Judges are issued with the very best equipment available. Equipment

The Judge Dredd miniatures game finds players controlling either a street gang or the Judges trying to stop its activities. The game takes place in a series of turns, in which players draw coloured chips from a cup or bag. If one of the Judge team’s chips is drawn, that player can activate one of their figures; if one of the gang’s chips is drawn, then their controlling player can choose to activate one of their models. In retaliation to the percieved injustice of the food restrictions following the Apocalypse War, militant elements of the obese founded the ‘League of Fatties’ believing they had an inalienable right to food, which they would take by any means necessary. In the Sláine Miniatures Game, the Earth Tribes of the goddess Danu battle the decayingDrune Lords and the relentless Fomorian Sea Demons, over the mist-soaked Land of the Young, in a fast-paced skirmish miniature wargame. Taking control of a small warband of warriors, champions and heroes, players will fight fast-paced battles to determine the fate of humanity in the pre-history of the world. Recruit legendary heroes, such as the titular Sláine Mac Roth, and chart their successes in the Cosmic Battle by performing feats and earning boons. The set also comes with a double-sided play mat featuring different streetscapes. This is of a generally decent quality. However, it doesn’t match up to any of the set specific scenarios! The terrain on the map actually introduced confusion into my own playthroughs of these missions. This is as it didn’t agree with the set-ups proposed. In fact, it makes little sense to use it as a beginner when starting out. This is frustrating given the intention of this set. This scenario is based on the story ‘Requiem for a Heavyweight’ as seen in 2000 AD progs 331–334. This story was also reprinted in Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 07.

Incendiary:designed to set fire to its target, this round contains Phosphex which, once ignited, is very, verydifficult to extinguish. In the 2080s speed and volume eating, ‘scoffing’, became a competitive sport and extreme obesity became the desired body image for many Mega-City citizens.Your Judges, however, will need those skills and improved stat lines if they are to survive life in the Big Meg. With the Judge Dredd Miniatures Gameincluding rules and miniatures for some of the most dangerous individuals the world has ever seen, Judges will be pitted against the likes of Judge Death, Mean Machine Angel and Orlok the Assassin; perps who have faced Judge Dredd himself on many occasions. Any Mega-City One Judge must aspire to Dredd’s legendary levels of skill and determination if they are to bring justice to such legendary killers. Justice in the Judge Dredd Miniatures Game
