About this deal

Possibly the anise liqueur most often referred to as an absinthe alternative is the Provençal pastis, distilled with star anise, fennel, licorice, and other aromatic herbs, then added sugar. A popular take on the classic Flaming Sambuca, the Lamborghini consists of the following ingredients in equal measures:

Molinari Sambuca, established in 1945, is perhaps the best-known sambuca brand. It’s an Italian household regular, and was even authenticated by the Italian government as the superior sambuca of Italy in the 1960s. Molinari’s recipe is safely guarded, but is said to include star anise oils from China and sugar and wheat for grain spirit sourced throughout Europe. Luxardo, the famous Maraschino makers, also produce a popular sambuca, as does Antica. First, the name Sambuca is believed to be a derivative of the Latin word Elderberry. But, even though Sambuca contains elderberry in some recipes, it is not among the primary ingredients.

1. Molinari Sambuca Extra

Sambuca is a traditional Italian anise-flavoured clear liqueur served in a shot glass and has the unmistakable taste of liquorice. How Do You Drink Sambuca? After the mixture has settled, filter it at room temperature. Avoid chill-filtering because it results in the louche effect (when you add water to your sambuca it forms a cloudy oil-in-water emulsion; this is what is usually referred to as the louche effect.) and removes the critical oils. Sambuca becomes a refreshing drink when mixed with soda water, tonic water, or orange juice. Sambuca pairs well with coffee and can be served hot or cold. It is divine when added to a milkshake or Mocha Frappe. How To Drink A Flaming Sambuca Meanwhile, the most common legend is that three flies were drawn to the sugary sweet sambuca and landed in an old ladies glass. As they had disturbed the old lady and her family, her solution was to flambé the sambuca with a match.

Simply add a 5 ml (⅙ Oz) of sambuca to an espresso cup and swirl it around so it leaves an even coating of spirit on the inside. Afterwards, just pour in the 45 ml (1.5 Oz) of coffee straight from the espresso machine. However you prefer your Sambuca, remember to give a toast to its legacy by enjoying a shot with three coffee beans…. and if you are trying a Flaming Sambuca for the first time, mind your eyebrows! Overall, the process is not dissimilar to producing akvavit in that the ingredients are simply added to the alcohol to create its unique flavour. However, akvavit steeps the botanicals while sambuca introduces the ingredients as essentials oils. Often referred to a “sambuca fly”, a shot of the alcoholic spirit may be served with a roasted coffee bean in the glass, which is chewed when drinking. In Italy, this practice is referred to as “sambuca con la mosca” or “sambuca with the fly”. Anise spirits of similar makeup and ritual exist throughout the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions. Turkey’s raki is made with twice-distilled grapes and aniseed, and is a go-to spirit for celebration or serious discussions. According to lore, the proper preparation and setting of a raki session depends on the occasion.Foods To Die For. Andrews McMeel Publishing. Nov 1, 2007. p. 935. ISBN 978-0740770432 . Made from the original recipe, Luxardo Sambuca Dei Cesari Liqueur is made with local herbs, green Sicilian star anise, sugar, and spirit alcohol. The distilled spirit is poured into Finnish wood vats and left to mature till it is just right. On The Nose There are numerous stories as to how the sambuca fly tradition started. One belief is that started as a practical joke where somebody would drop a coffee bean into their friend’s sambuca when they weren’t looking to surprise them.

Molinari sambuca became the spirit of Rome’s dolce vita, capturing a generation of Italians through its innovative marketing. Today, Sambuca dominates the Italian on-trade with an 85% share Sambuca is flavoured with essential oils obtained from star anise, or less commonly, green anise. Other spices such as elderflower, liquorice and others may be included but are not required as per the legal definition. It is bottled at a minimum of 38% alcohol by volume. [1] [2] The oils are added to pure alcohol, a concentrated solution of sugar, and other flavourings. According to others, Sambuca was derived from the word Zammut , an Arabic drink with an anise flavor. The Zammut came into Italy through the port of Civitavecchia, which some people believe is the origin of Sambuca. This theory seems to be a more accurate explanation of the name’s source.
