About this deal

It is always interesting to me to read a short story by an author whose novels I enjoy. All the elements are there, in a tighter weave than usual. It is a mystery how it done for nothing is missing. The stories are concise, well woven, and captivating. Catherine Lundoff’s stories have appeared in over 80 publications including Callisto: A Queer Fiction Journal, The Cainite Conspiracies, Ghosts in Gaslight, Monsters in Steam, So Fey: Queer Faery Stories, The Mammoth Book of Professor Moriarty Adventures, Tales of the Unanticipated, Periphery: Erotic Lesbian Futures, Farrago’s Wainscot and Best Lesbian Erotica. She is the author of Out of This World: Queer Speculative Fiction Stories and Silver Moon: A Wolves of Wolf's Point Novel (new updated edition) and the editor of Scourge of the Seas of Time (and Space) , all from Queen of Swords Press.

Love, Supernatural StyleLove is the universal language. And nowhere is this more apparent than in these extraordinary stories from four of today’s hottest authors. I found this story entertaining, because it was fun to read about Judith, Will and Kit. I enjoyed the ending, because it was excellent. I used to believe once that ours was the age in which we would say farewell to myths and legends, when they would fall off us like useless plumage and we would see ourselves clearly only as what we are. I thought the camera was the key to this process. But I think the world cannot bear to be only what it is. The world always wants another world, a shadow, an echo, a model of itself.”

Still with me? You sure? I’m going to reveal the ending. I don’t often do this, but this one rather bugged me. If you don’t want to know, stop reading this.Setting: Out of This World starts on Earth as we know it, but proceeds to take place on a variety of alien worlds with everything from transparent mammals to giant wasps to kangaroo-legged owl-men. All of these worlds have portals that semi-randomly appear, which are what connect the worlds ;-). A story about a professional editor, Erica, who receives a box which contains a statue of a cat. Soon she meets Rashida who tells her an incredible story about the statue. Harry Beech was an internationally recognized photographer traveling the world to shoot the often horrific scenes that would appear in the media. He needed to stay emotionally distant from his photos, though his constant traveling caused him to be physically and emotionally distant from his wife and daughter. He realizes the problem with photography "is what you don't see"but he never realizes that is true in his personal life as well. This reminds me of an old ninety's sit com where each episode ended in learning something vital that you can apply to your own life. The morals aren't shoved in your face quite as much, but they definitely get the point across. Zachary & Jenna are having breakfast when suddenly there is a shimmering in the air and their parents disappear. What are two bright middle school kids to do but jump through after them? Well....

Immortality, Shayne - Not my kind of story at all, but fans of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier might like it. I just don't care for dark psychological mysteries or those with their roots in paganism. Also, two smaller problems are that I saw the twist coming from the very beginning and this book didn't take place in outer space. The furthest it got from earth was an airplane ride, which didn't seem to fit the theme. As many speculative fiction readers are aware of, LGBTQ characters are seldom seen in speculative fiction stories, because heterosexual characters can be found everywhere. LGBTQ characters have mostly been featured in novels and stories published by independent presses, because independent presses tend to be more open-minded towards elements concerning sexual orientation and gender issues than bigger presses. Because LGBTQ characters still remain rarities in modern speculative fiction, it's great that Catherine Lundoff writes about them and explores their lives. Because I've always enjoyed reading beautifully written stories, I was instantly captivated by this richly told story. The author writes excellently about the protagonist's search for Vadija and where it leads her. The characterisation is fluent and impressive, because Catherine Lundoff writes captivatingly about the characters, their lives and their feelings. It's nice that the characters' sexuality is never the focal point of the stories, but more like a spice that gives a distinct flavour to them. The characters and their lives will captivate many readers regardless of their gender or sexuality. I enjoyed the depth of characters in this book and insights. All of them damaged and pensive, trying to work out where it all went wrong and how it could have been different. Narrated in the first person by predominantly two characters, Harry and Sophie. The book spans generations of the same family, from the Robert Beech (war hero and ammunitions factory owner) to his son Harry (war photographer) and then Harry's daughter, Sophie, who lives in the USA with her two twin boys aged 10. Each character has had suffered loss due to death of partners and parents and this has lead to dysfunctional relationships throughout the generations. This was not easy, nor a very pleasant read, since the stream-of-consciousness accounts and the fragmentary nature of each snapshot requires that the readers pay attention and always try to find the truth beyond the subjectivity of each perspective.
